This is the family of Minnie Lee Leatherman who married William Edgar May in about 1900 in Dallas County, TX. She and her three brothers were born in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, but apparently the family moved to the Dallas area while the children were young as they were all found in Dallas.
Marshall came from a family of at least 10 children. I have a little information on most of them - birth, marriage, death records and some of their children's names. Claiborne Parish is in the northwest corner of Louisiana. There is a Leatherman's Creek named for this family in Claiborne Parish. It is near Athens in the lower part of the parish.
I have this family traced back to Johann Christian Leatherman Sr., born in 1739 in Falchner Swamp, PA. Some researchers say his father was a Hans Dewalt Leatherman, but we aren't sure so I have not included him.

This is a hypothesis that John & Elizabeth Leatherman are the parents of John Thomas Leatherman. The family bible listed them in there with dates of death and had their ages and it seemed to fit.

News from Erath County paper, Erath Appeal May 17, 1900 One of the most horrible accidents in the history of Selden settlement (SE of Stephenville) was that of "Uncle" Sam Leatherman Sunday evening about six o'clock, which was the result of his little visitor, Callie Poe, using kerosene oil to kindle a fire in the stove. It seems she had filled the stove with broom weeds and they had not lit fast enough when she picked up the oil can and was pouring oil over the weeds when the can exploded and the flames covered her. "Uncle" Sam hearing the screams of the little child ran to her assistance and was covered with flames. His wife ran in and was badly burned but succeeded in getting out of the room. "Uncle" Sam retreated to the back veranda and being suffocated sank to the floor and could not rise anymore, and when the neighbors reached the burned house they could see him on he veranda but the heat was so intense they could not reach him. The little child ran from the kitchen to the dining room and fell. When the bodies were recovered from the ashes they had burned to coals. It will be remembered that "Uncle" Sam lost a house by fire about one year ago. Note:Callie Poe, adopted daughter, and Uncle Sam share a headstone.

The Daily Herald, April 11, 1937 After crossing safely in front of an outbound car in the 400 block on West Commerce Street Saturday night, Marshall P. Leatherman, 78, a resident of West Dallas on Route 8, was hit by an inbound taxicab on the opposite side of the street and was hurled to his death on the pavement. M. C. Fulgham, driver of a Ford Rent cab, said he saw a figure dart out in front of his car and swerved to miss it. Instead, Leatherman, who apparently had not seen the cab, continued his advance toward the car, the driver said. The four passengers in the cab were frightened by the sudden excitement but did not know what had happened until Leatherman lay dead on the pavement. Leatherman was taken to Baylor Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Burial arrangements are pending at Weiland funeral Home, where the body was taken. Leatherman, a retired carpenter, is survived by three sons, S. E., C. B. and T. H. Leatherman, all of Dallas; one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Nicks (Nix) of Dallas, and one sister, Mrs. Mollie Bryant of Shreveport, La. Another article stated that his clothing was caught in or on the door handle of the taxi and was dragged 20 feet to his death. His skull, right leg and jaw were fractured and he was injured internally.

John Turner and parents moved to Bell County, TX. in 1860 and settled in Milam County, Tx. John married Mary Helen Walker Oct. 11, 1883 in Milam Co., Tx. Their first three children were born in Milam Co. They were Estelle Geneva in 1884, Morris Elkin in 1886 and Burrell Octavus in 1888. They moved to the Sisk community near the Ed Miller place east of Stephenville in Erath Co. Tx in 1890. They lived in a one room cabin where the other five children were born. Samuel Burton in 1890, Johnnie Guy in 1892, Peter Marshall in 1894, Paul Conrad in 1895 (he only lived eleven months) and Prentiss Dee in 1899. Over the years John & Mary acquired several hundred acres of land, including their home and store, known as Cedar Point Store, across from the present location of the Cedar Point Baptist Church, east of Stepenville on FM205, and their home was about one quarter mile east of the store on the south side of FM205. John farmed several acres of cotton, corn and other feed for their livestock. Farmers those days would hand shell their corn, and had the corn meal ground at a grist mill, and paid for the grinding with corn. They saved most all of their seeds, needed for their planting. They grew most all of their basic food on the farms, just buying their staple items. There were very few hospitals. The Doctors made rural weekly visits in a buggy checking on their patients, and emergency house calls. There were several people who had switch boards in their homes, with party lines, crank wall phones, and with crank codes. Most people back in those days visited, treasured and loved their neighbors. John Turner died April 15, 1927, and was buried in the Indian Creek Cemetery, south of Stephenville, in Erath Co., Tx. Mary Helen died March 17, 1938 and was buried in the Indian Creek Cemetery also.

Elmer accidentally shot himself in 1971 in the chest, puncturing his lungs & barely missed his heart. Recovered from that fine, then in July 1973 he was in a corner store about one block from his house when a man chased a woman and her daughter into the store and started shooting. Elmer thought he could get out the door and the man shot him in the head and killed him instantly. The police surrounded the store and the man shot and killed himself.

After David and Ebah married, they lived in a house he and his brother Elmo had built in 1934, in the northeast corner of Floydada. David and Elmo lived in a cellar while building it. David and Ebah divorced after the birth of their fourth child and David never remarried. Ebah remarried only after David had died.
David had a small dump truck, and was in the Sand & Gravel business. He eventually started a steel business closer to town. He built a building that he lived in. He stocked a big assortment of bolts and other hardware type items, which grew into a prosperous business. he built a shovel type loader on a truck. He could load trucks with sand and gravel. He was always trying to build or add to something. Before he married he put three car transmissions in a model T Ford truck, two in forward for speed, one in backward for power. He hauled wheat from the combines to the elevators. He followed wheat harvest from Floydada north to the Dakotas.
When David decided to retire he wanted to leave the plains and move farther east, he started looking for a place in the country with trees and spring water on it. He and his brother Lee found an 83.5 acre place with a small house and spring on it in Lee County, near Lexington, TX. David bought it and told Lee he would deed him about 3 acres to build him a house on, and would will him 1/2 of the place at his death. Lee agreed to that and built a two bedroom, one bath home on it and assisted David with his moving.
David enjoyed hunting and playing standard and steel guitars.
In 1991 David's children put him in a Snyder nursing home near Nelda, so she could check on him and pay his bills for him. David died in the nursing home and was buried next to his parents in the Holders Chapel Cemetery in western Parker County. (Submitted by Elmo Leatherman)

Obituary in family newsletter by Wanda Lovelace: Lee, son of Morris E. & Sarah A., was born August 6, 1908 at Cedar Point, Erath County, Tx. He married Minnie Cannedy of Floydada in 1933. They had a son, Royce. They were soon divorced. In 1937 Lee lived with Clarence & family in Jayton, Tx., they had two trucks and hauled cattle & sheep from that area to Fort Worth. Lee's truck was a 1935 Ford with a shop made 28 ft. trailer. Clarence's was a new 1937 Ford & a new Hobbs trailer with oak cattle sideboards. Those days most trucks had mechanical brakes and the trailers were single axle without any brakes at all. That kind of hauling was seasonal. Clarence moved to Floyd County and Lee stayed at Jayton and put in a laundry. That didn't last long. Late 1939 Lee went to work driving a truck hauling butane from Borger, Tx. to Spur, Tx. he was a Star route mail carrier from Spur to Lubbock, on the days he wasn't hauling butane. He married a cousin, Ruth Matlock of Stonewall County, in the early 40's. They moved to his parents farm in Parker County, Tx. They had one son, Johnny Steve, born Jan. 11, 1945. Lee went to work at the Mineral Wells Clay Products operating machinery. When Camp Wolters opened he started barbering in a shop in the PX. He gave Elmo his GI haircut when he was drafted. After he retired from barbering he bought some lots joining Buchanan Lake, and built a house there. While living there he had a hip replacement in San Antonio. In the early '70's he moved to Lee County, near Lexington, Tx. and built a house near his brother David. His son, Steve, and family live in nearby Giddings, Tx. Lee's hobby was building and repairing Fiddles. He built two. He enjoyed playing country and breakdown music on his fiddle with his brother Elmo accompanying on a guitar. Lee died May 2, 1997 at his home, and was buried by his parents in Holders Chapel Cemetery, near Cool, Tx. in western Parker County. Submitted by: Elmo Leatherman
