In George Sanderson's NEW CUMNOCK Far And Away, the author relates the early history of the Dalleagles School. Originally a private school funded by Lady Oranmore, the Parish School Board reluctantly took over it's operation and funding. It selected a New Cumnock man, John McRae, to be the Headmaster. John and his mother, Jane McRae, moved into the Schoolhouse. John married Hannah Drennan of Old Cumnock in 1869. The three children of John and Hannah were all born in the Schoolhouse: Jane in 1870; John Hair in 1874; and, George Drennan in 1877. In 1878, John's mother Jane died at Dalleagles. John's wife,Hannah, died at Dalleagles in 1891. John Hair married Marion Davidson of Old Cumnock in 1892. And in August of 1892 John McRae retired to Pathhead on a small pension. Youngest son, George, and daughter, Jane, moved with him. In 1898 Jane was married to John Howatson Paterson of New Cumnock. In September 1899, John McRae died at Pathhead his youngest son, George, was the listed "witness." In the Census of 1861, John resided in Dalleagles village. In the Census of 1871, 1881 and 1891, he was a resident of the Dalleagles School. The Dalleagles Schoolhouse had been "home" to three generations of McRae's. Sadly, the original structure (below) burned down in 1934(?).
