The Revolutionary War Ancestors of Marion Gohr

In tracing my wife's ancestry, I've only found one Revolutionary War soldier in her direct lineage so far. He was from Lunenberg County, Virginia and is the first proven Johnson ancestor in Marion's family. He was a major in the 6th Virginia Regiment and was killed by Indians during the Revolutionary War period. One fourth of Marion's ancestors are not eligible for service in the American Revolution as her grandmother, Mary (Stumpf) Brown was born on the Atlantic Ocean in 1907 when her family was in the process of immigrating from Russia. All the rest of Marion's ancestors are from early American stock which arrived in the U.S. in the mid-to-late 1700s or earlier.

Marion's only known Revolutionary War ancestor is:

James JOHNSON, b. 1743, d. ca. 1777 Lunenberg Co., VA (killed by Indians); md. ca. 1776 to Rebekah MARTIN, b. 1745 Maryland, d. 1845 Dickson Co., TN. He was a Major in the 6th Virginia Regiment during the Revolutionary War. Also, the HISTORY OF NORTHWEST ARKANSAS states that evidence indicates that he was a commissioned officer of some note.

James Johnson is from a family that distinguished itself in many early wars of our country. He was the father of Martin Johnson who served in the War of 1812, and he was the great-grandfather of Lieutenant John Johnson of the Union Army during the Civil War.

Because of Major James Johnson's service, my wife Marion is eligible to join the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, although she has never tried to join that organization. For more information on James Johnson and his service, see my wife's web page called JOHNSON/JOHNSTON GENEALOGY which is located at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gohrpage/johnson.html
