DESCENDANTS OF TIMOTHY HARNEY AND ELIZABETH GREENE of Somerset County, Maryland. Summary of early records of this family. TIMOTHY HARNEY was born circa 1655, in Somerset County, Maryland. On 26 December 1682, he was married by Col. William Coleborne, J.P., to Elizabeth GREENE. Timothy Harney patented a parcel of land on 16 July 1696. This land consisted of 240 acres in Baltimore 100, which he called "Timothy's Choice". Deed records show that after Timothy's death, the land remained in the possession of his widow. It was passed along to their son Thomas Harney Sr., and in turn, to their grandson, Thomas Harney, Jr. Thomas Harney, Sr. who was born in 1686, married Miss SELBY. She may be one of the daughters of Richard, William or Daniel Selby, who also lived in Baltimore 100. Thomas Sr. and Miss Selby had two children born in Baltimore 100, in Somerset County, which later became part of Worcester County, Maryland, when this county was formed in 1742. Their children were: Thomas Harney, Jr., born circa 1710, married Hannah Mills (see below); and Ann Harney, born circa 1712. Ann Harney (also spelled Horney and Horne) was married in St. Martin's Church on 4 April 173- to Frances WHARTON. Frances Wharton shared pew number 23, with Ann's father, Thomas Harney, Senior, according to church records. Thomas Sr., a lawyer, represented John Wharton in a Quit Claim deed passing land over to Frances Wharton. Frances and Ann had the following children: Joseph Wharton, born 30 May 173- ; John Wharton, b. 16 March 173- ; Frances Wharton, b. 27 December 17-- ; Harney Wharton, b. 25 February 174- ; Ann Wharton, b. 11 October 174-; and Sarah Wharton, b. 24 March 175- (the last digit of the year is omitted from the church records). Thomas Harney, Jr, brother of Ann, above, was also a member of St. Martin's Church, and was elected Inspector for the Baltimore warehouse on the Indian River from 1756 thru 1761. As mentioned previously, land records show that Thomas Harney, Sr. passed on the land he inherited from his father, to his son, Thomas Jr. Thomas Jr., who was married to Hannah MILLS, in turn, sold the land as follows: 13 Feb 1775 - Thomas Harney with wife Hannah Harney sold to Noah COLLINS 132 acres of the parcels called "Timothy's Choice", "Puzzle", and "Friendship". In addition to the land called "Timothy's Choice" which he inherited from his grandfather, Thomas had purchased 100 acres called "Friendship" from William HOLLAND on 25 August 1762. The parcel of land called "Puzzle" was patented on 7 January 1759, by Thomas Harney for 50 acres. Thomas also patented 76 acres in 1749 which he called "Partnership", and another parcel in 1750, called "Good Success". He sold part, 25 acres, of "Good Success" to John AYDELOTTE, a bricklayer, on 25 August 1762. (Ref: Land Records of Worcester County, MD 1666-1810, by Ruth T. Dryden). Thomas Harney and Hannah Mills had the following children: Selby Harney, b. circa 1733; Mary Harney, b. circa 1734, married Mr. John? WISE; Jenethan (also spelled Genethan), b. circa 1736-45, Joshua Harney; Hannah Harney, married Joshua TAYLOR of Kentucky; Nancy Harney, married Isaac WEST, of Cassidy Creek, KY; Thomas Harney, b. 1762; Mills Harney, b. circa 1764; Sarah "Sary" Harney, married John SHANKLIN, 25 October 1787, in Delaware. In his will Thomas Harney left one shilling each to his children Selby, Mary Wise, Mills, Jenethan, Joshua, Hannah Taylor, Nancy West, and Sary Shanklin. To his son Thomas he left "all my land and a plantation that I now live on". Thomas was also sole Executor of the will. The will was written on 19 February 1790, and probated 26 April 1796, in Sussex County, Delaware. Will abstract of Thomas Wise, Onslow co. NC, p.1385 #142. Mentions wife & children.
