Speculation by descendent Julian Kratzner, February 20, 1995:

I’ve long been puzzled by the 10 year time spread between two of Michael Cramer’s children. Benjamin J. Cramer born 1847, and Susanna Cramer born 1857. I just saw a documentary on the Oregon Train and the California gold rush. They said that “Some got rich, some stayed, and some cam back.” Would it be an educated guess that Michael Cramer was part of that westward movement? That he was among those who came back?

If this theory holds water, Michael would have left the family while Nancy and children were still in Marion County, Ohio. The Benjamin Cramer and John Jacoby Jr. group were in Marion County, Ohio until 1854. By 1857 the family was in Marshall County, Indiana. So Michael was not with the family when they moved.
