MY
BATES FAMILY
My earliest known BATES
ancestor was JAMES SHOCKLEY BATES,
born about 1810-1812 in South Carolina
and died about 1882 in Georgia.
He moved from SC
to Franklin Co, Georgia
by 1828, where his first child was born. He had 16 children between his four
wives! James Shockley Bates lived in Franklin Co,
GA in 1850. Hart County,
GA was formed in 1853 from Franklin and Elbert
Counties. He was listed on the 1860 Census of Hart Co,
Bowersville, GA. In 1870, he was living in Hart Co, GA, in Dooley's District. By 1880, he was
living in Hays District, Newton Co, GA.
It is not know where he is buried.
There were Shockley families
living in the western portion of S.C. in the early 1800’s, and it is assumed
that he is somehow related to them, although no connection has been proven that
I know of.
Feel free to email me for more
information, or to let me know of corrections you can make, or additions you
can provide.
