Nov 27, 1862 - enlisted for 3 years, Co G 4th TN INF VOLUNTEERS (U.S.)
June 15, 1863 - mustered in at Nashville, TN
Oct 3, 1863 - was captured by Wheeler's Confederate Cavalry and parolled at McMinnville,TN., (Chattanooga area). Regiment had been captured and men had been scattered to their homes and were ordered to reassemble at Camp Nelson, KY. While his unit was crossing the Cumberland Mtns, going from Camp Nelson, KY, to Knoxville, TN, in the Winter of 1863 and Spring of 1864, (he was a Teamster at this time), he became afflicted with "chronic diarrhea" (the #1 killer disease during the war), from which he never recovered. Commanded by Cpt. Joseph Chockley. Messed and bunked with Alick James (as per his pension record).
Aug 2, 1865 discharged.
Sept 8, 1865 married Martha Taylor (actual marriage certificate is in pension file at the National Archives, Washington, DC)
1865 Started receiving pension for "disibility" caused by the war; $2 a month until increased in 1881.
1871 and 1872 lived in Western Tenn., then returned to Washington Co., TN

July 27, 1897 - age 58, resided "near Garber", Washington Co, TN
Nov 20, 1909 William Franklin Hampton died. Martha applied for Widow's Pension in TN on Nov 27, 1909, and received $12 a month until death. In her claim for his pension, statements were given by a George W. Willette, age 68, and his sister Annie Larrance, age 58, that "their Mother practically raised Martha".

During the years following the war, he repeatedly applied for increases in his pension due to his continuing disability, and the paperwork was extensive! In his Pension File at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., there are numerous statements made by William Franklin Hampton himself, along with friends, employers and relatives, describing his condition and their relationships to him. The following is some of the more interesting information found, mostly dated Feb. and March 1884:
William Franklin himself stated that he currently lived 5 miles south of Jonesboro, and had worked in farming, mining, saw milling and wagoning since the war. Prior to his enlistment he worked for Major Jacob Brown of Chuckey Valley, Washington Co., TN and when asked to name some of the men he enlisted with, he gave these names: "Sam West, dead now, and (Buy?) Ellis and Johnny Price, who have both gone West."
James L. Price testified that he had lived within a few hundred yards from William for 7 years.
Jacob B. Hartsell (age 33), testified that William had worked for him, farming and milling, and was a neighbor since the close of war, except when William was in West TN in 1871 and 72.
Marion Hampton, farmer, (his brother) his address was Telford, Washington Co., TN. He had messed and bunked with William during the war, and said William had gotten medicine for his illness from Asst. Surgeon Covington at that time.
William A. Moorefield stated they met in service, messed together and slept in the same tent. After the war, they "lived no further than 4 miles apart, and as near as 1 1/2 mile, except when he was in West TN about 1872".
J. A. Febuary, age 39, Postmaster, "Have known him for 20 years. I commanded the Company". (He was mustered in a Sgt. until Oct. 1864 and then was made 1st Lt. of Co. G.)
George W. Sprinkler, age 61, carpenter. "Have known him since 1854", was in the same unit and that the unit "marched from Nashville to McMinnville, then to Knoxville, then to Bulls Gap where they were met by Rebel Forces and fell back to Buell Station." (Oct 1863)
John Boreing, age 44, farmer, neighbor. Was in the same unit, mustered in as Pvt., was in prison the Winter of 1863 until March 21, 1864, and promoted to 2nd Lt. about Oct 1864
John Miller, farmer, states that William had worked for him every year since the war.
David Britt states William had worked for him as carpenter and harvester.

Marion Francis Hampton stated to the pension board that he'd had a brother named George that died young.
The following mostly gleaned from his pension record found at the National Archives, Washington, D.C.: June 6, 1863 - Marion Hampton had a friend Bill Sliger, who was going to join the Rebel Army, and wanted Marion to go along with him. Bill said he was going to join just so he could get through the Rebel lines and then he was going to join the Yankees. They enlisted at Jonesboro, TN, into Co I, 63rd TN INFANTRY (Confederate). A few weeks later, Marion realized that they weren't going to leave the unit, that Bill had just tricked him so that he would sign up. Wesley tried to take him home, but they wouldn't let him go. He then starved himself to lose weight and "played sick" intending to get a sick furlough to escape. He was in hospitals in TN and VA at least 8 months and was then sent home on sick leave, with orders that he would have to rejoin the unit when they came through Jonesboro. He never returned to them. He was later almost denied pension because of his "disloyalty to the U.S." Although he claimed his alleged Confederate service "was not a volunteer service". He later states that his brother-in-law A.J. Sliger was also in the same Regiment.
April 10, 1864 - Marion Hampton enlisted at Strawberry Plains, TN and was mustered in at Loudon, TN, in G Co 4th Tenn Infantry, (U.S.), commanded by J.W. Chockley. Was described as having grey eyes, dark hair, dark skin, 5'7"tall and was a farmer. Isaac Hodge and Franklin Phillips were bunk mates. Other comrades were Isaac Hodge, brother William F. Hampton, Sgt. George W. Walters and 2nd Lt. John Boreing.
December 1864 - Contracted disease of the eyes, on the "Faint Rock raid", (near Knoxville,TN), of which he never recovered, his vision worsened with age. Discharged at Nashville on Aug 2, 1865.
In a later statement, he says that he and Harrison Salts were raise together as boys, lived 1/2 mile away, and that he had worked for Harrison until he moved.

Jan 24, 1914 - Marion stated: "I lived in 1850 with my father Asey and mother “(M.H.)” in Tellico Plains in Monroe County with Riley, Elizabeth, Wesley, Franklin, and Jesse."
Apr 2, 1915 - Marion stated he was living with wife, and all kids were living, "as far as I know."
Jun 12, 1918 – Marion was age 73, resident of Milligan College, Carter Co, TN. Was receiving pension of $20 per month.

November 1864 - Injured breast and right leg, by wagon running over him, while regiment was skirmishing and evacuating at Decatur, Ala. On the 1890 Special Census for surviving veterans, he was listed as Corporal?

July 7, 1911 - Wesley died at Elk Park, NC. After his death, Jane lived with Lena (Mrs. C.H. Carmichel) and her family for eight years before buying a 4 room house by "putting $150 as a down payment, and paying for the balance in installments". She purchased it from Monroe Fulkerson who lived in the adjoining lot.
Aug 11, 1911 - In a letter written to the Pension Dept. by Harrison Hampton (Jonesboro,TN) after his fathers death, he states his father was married twice, and that his mother died when he was small. "He lived only a short distance from me, hardly 300 yards". "He married 2nd time around 1885, until last Feb. when she went away", this was regarded as a separation. She went to her fathers (Mr. Hicks) home 1 1/2 miles from Elk Park, NC (Avery Co.). She never returned. His health continued to fail at which time he went to stay with someone(?). He sold property after he left, "she must have signed the deed". "I never saw him after that (June 22, 1911). He died July 7 at Elk Park, NC". Son was confined to bed with a sickness, and was notified by phone of his fathers death. "My father had always wished to be buried here, but they did not send his remains".

July 18, 1924 - Jane died. Lena had cared for her Mother prior to her death and filed for pension after Jane died, to help pay for her expenses, but was denied because Jane owned a house and lot valued at $500, which was left to Lena. Lena stated that they sacrificed to support her mother during her last days, since her husband was a "common laborer". Lena had 2 sons.

Census stated that Jesse was divorced and Martha and Wesley were widowed.
