The following sent by Patricia Poland of the Dickerson Genealogy and Local History Room:

James Pearson Broome, front row, 1st from the left
W. C. Heath (Major Heath) can be seen directly in the middle (8 from right, 2nd row or looking at the first row and counting to the 5th man from the left who is seated, standing behind his left shoulder is Will Crow Heath).

The Monroe Journal, p 1, June 20, 1922: "Thirty Confederate Veterans Go to Richmond for Reunion"

Thirty old Confederate veterans of the county and ten from South Carolina boarded the special car at Monroe yesterday morning for Richmond to attend the annual reunion which convenes in that city today.

He [Major W. C. Heath] ...invited all the members of Camp Walkup to Monroe and had uniforms made for them, regardless of whether they were in financial condition to pay for them or not...

Clad in the old Confederate gray, they presented a more soldierly appearance than ever before.

...they were placed in front of the Confederate monument on the west side of the court house and a group picture taken.

(From Patricia: The men who are not in the gray uniforms that W. C. Heath had made were probably the ten men from South Carolina who also went.)

Additional comments:

Far right on the front row identified above as “Burle Broom” above was Burwell H. Broom (July 13, 1847-Mar 26, 1931). He was in Co. F, 2nd NC Jr. Reserves. Buried at Faulks Baptist Church. See tombstone photo.

From Dale: The gentleman sixth from the left----or 5 from the right-- on front row, I believe is Bartley Hezekiha Benton my great grandfather. [Note: He was a 1st Lieut. in Co F, 2nd NC Junior Reserves. He was born Sep 2, 1846 and died Feb 8, 1926].

SEE ANOTHER VETERANS GROUP PHOTO THAT HAS HIS NAME ON IT. CAN YOU IDENTIFY ANYONE??

From Terry Purcell: The gentleman standing on the second row, 2nd from far left could be my Great Grandfather Minor Jackson Short [1] (Oct 28, 1837- Aug 14, 1932), served in Co. E, 48th NC Infantry Regt.

From Shaun Gibson: Second Row on left side, second to the right I believe is my GGGrandfather James Ranson Ferguson of Co. I, 48th NC Regt.
Then on his left and the other three on his right is his brothers, my GG uncles:
Leander R. Ferguson  Co. F, 48th NC Infantry Regt.
Leonard R. Ferguson  Co. F, 48th NC Infantry Regt.
Pleasant C. Ferguson  Co. I, 48th NC Infantry Regt.
William Q. Ferguson   Co. I, 48th NC Infantry Regt.

[1] Minor Jackson Short - Born: 28 Oct 1837-Died: 14 Aug 1932. Buried: Weddington Methodist Church near Waxhaw, NC. Parents: John Short & Nancy __. Spouse: Hannah Abigail Montgomery (B: 20 Aug 1840, D: 2 Feb 1902, Buried: next to Minor). Children: Liza, Melinda, David F., Thomas M., William A., Josie B.  Tidbits of info: He stood 5' 9 1/2" tall, outlived his wife by 30 years living to be 95 yrs old, and the story goes that he swore he would never cut his beard until the south won. Unfortunately he died before this could happen. He enlisted in Conf States Army on 15 March 1862 @ Griffins and went immediately to Camp Mangum where he was mustered into Co. E, 48th Regiment, N.C. Infantry as a private on 19 March 1862. He was a 24 yr old farmer from Union County and was 5 ft. 9 1/2 inches tall. Minor was wounded twice. The first time at Richmond, VA in June 1862 and the in Dec 1862 @ Fredericksburg, VA. After the battle @ Fredericksburg, Minor was promoted to Corporal. After his return to Union County, Minor & his wife lived in the Prospect area. He made a living farming but the big thing in his life was to attend the United Confederate Veterans reunion. Thus my reasoning that the gentleman may be my GGrandfather Minor Jackson Short.  Terry Purcell <[email protected]>
