The Steffes family was well known in the Mosel River area. The earliest record found was for Peter Steffes who paid taxes to the Earl of Eltz in 1505 for property in Munstermaifeld.
Burg Eltz was built about 800 and is still owned by the Eltz Family (From the records of Burg Eltz, provided by Herr Josef Munch) The records show that many members of the Steffes family were employed at Burg Eltz.

There was a Steffes family in Müllenbach, Cochem that connects to the Treis Steffes families. I have not researched the Cochem records but several members of the Müllenbach Steffes families were Godparents over in Treis. Joannes Stephen Steffes, emigrated from Müllenbach to New York where he married Anna Margartha Mueller in 1843. Jacob Steffes married Anna Arenz in Marytown, Wisconsin on 5 February 1850, and Nicholas Steffes married Maria Anna Weber on 13 May 1850 at Mount Carmel, Wisconsin. Members of the Müllenbach Steffes family settled in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Oregon and Iowa.

Carl and Heinrich Steffes were found living in Treis in the middle 1600's.

2. CARL STEFFES was born before 1658 in the Mosel River area. He married Sophia Graff around 1675. She was born before 1657 and died on 31 January 1701 in Treis. I was unable to find either of their parents.

The five known children of Carl and Sophia were:

3. HEINRICH STEFFES was born before 1660. He was a shareholder in a farm near Treis named Honshausen. In 1684, Heinrich Steffes was a wealthy man. He married Catharina CONTZEN circa 1680. No marriage record was found but CATHARINA is referred to as Katharina Contzen, wife of Heinrich Steffes, schoffe, a Godmother on 18 December 1700 for Joannes Seiten, the son of Joannes Reinhard Seiten, and Amalia Castor. The records indicate that she was from Moselkern and they may have been married there. On June 8, 1678, Heinrich Conrath and his wife, Catharina, sold a mill in Moselkern to Jakob Contzen and his wife, Catharina, for 125 guilden. She could have been their daughter. Note: Information provided by Herr Josef Munch, personal interview in Treis, April 1997, from the records of Burg Eltz. She died on 5 April 1721 in Treis. The name was also found as Conzen, Konzen and Kontzen. Heinrich died on 23 August 1731.

4. NICOLAUS STEFFES (Carl,) was born before 1677. He married Catharina PLATTENERS about 1696.

The only known child of Nicolaus and Catharina was:

5. CUNOIS STEFFES (Carl) was baptized on 25 March 1677 in St. Johannes. The baptism date is from his marriage record. He was a schuster. He married Anna Maria MUNTNICH, daughter of Michael MUNTNICH and Anna SIMONIS, on 8 May 1709 in St. Johannes; He died before 1770. ANNA MARIA MUNTNICH was baptized on 12 March 1684 in St. Joannes. Her Godparents were Anna Maria, wife of Joannes Fuchs, praetor. Her date of birth was also on their marriage record. She died on 24 May 1748 at age 64.

The five known children of Cunois STEFFES and Anna Maria MUNTNICHwere:

8. MARIA STEFFES was born circa 1700. She married Joannes Adolph MULLER, son of Peter MULLER and Catharina KREBS, on 2 July 1722 in St. Johannes.

JOANNES ADOLPH MULLER was born between 1660 and 1679. He married Christina (?) before 1699. Christina, vxor (wife) of Joannes Muller, was a Godmother on February 22, 1699 for Christina Marx, the daughter of Joannes Marx and Anna Maria. This shows they were married before February of 1699.

The only known child of Maria STEFFES and Joannes Adolph MULLER was:

9. JOANNES STEFFES (Heinrich) was baptized on 28 October 1681 in St. Johannes. He married Anna Maria CASTOR, daughter of Anton CASTOR and Anna Maria HIMPEN, on 26 April 1711 in St. Johannes. He died on 20 August 1755 in Treis at age 73. ANNA MARIA CASTOR was baptized on 4 October 1689 in Treis. Her Godparents were Joannes Magin and Anna Maria Castor. She died after 1755.

13. JOANNES THEODORE STEFFES (Cunois, Carl) was baptized on 7 December 1710 in St. Johannes. His Godparents were Joannes Theodore Putz and Anna Catharina, daughter of Michael Muntenich. He married Magdalena PILLIG, daughter of Matthias PILLIG and Katharina BERTGEN, in 1735. He died before February 1776 as he is listed as deceased when his daughter, Catharina, was married. MAGDALENA PILLIG was baptized on 26 September 1707 in St. Johannes; Her Godparents were Joannes Muller and Maria Magdalena, wife of Gottfried Peters. She died on 19 November 1762 at age 55.

The seven known children of Joannes Theodore STEFFES and Magdalena PILLIG were:

14. CATHARINA STEFFES (Cunois, Carl) was baptized on 30 April 1713 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Joannes Jacob Muntenich, adolesant, and Katharina, wife of Peter Valwig. She married Jacob BEUREN, son of Simon BEUREN and Katharina KENN, before 1736. She died on 16 April 1785 at age 71. JACOB BEUREN was baptized on 11 April 1706 in St. Johannes. He died on 20 November 1777 at age 71.

The 11 known children of Catharina STEFFES and Jacob BEUREN were:

16. JOANNES GEORGE STEFFES (Cunois, Carl) was baptized on 28 July 1718. He married Maria Margaretha DERFELD, daughter of Joannes DERFELD and Eva HINNEN, on 18 February 1749 in St. Johannes; He married Anna Katharina LAUBACH, daughter of Joannes Nicolaus LAUBACH and Anna Barbara PICKART, on 13 August 1759 in St. Johannes. He died on 26 April 1772 at age 53. MARIA MARGARETHA DERFELD was baptized on 26 January 1721 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Paul Himmes of Etiger, and Maria Magdalena, daughter of Peter Hertweilers. She died before 1759.

The three known children of Joannes George STEFFES and Maria Margaretha DERFELD were:

ANNA KATHARINA LAUBACH was baptized on 30 April 1729 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Anna Maria, daughter of Gottfried Peters, and Joannes Henrichs, schoffe of Pommern.

The two known children of Joannes George STEFFES and Anna Katharina LAUBACH both in Treis were:

17. JOANNES STEFFES (Cunois, Carl) was baptized on 9 March 1721 in St. Johannes. He married Elisabeth Barbara SCHNEIDERS on 21 January 1761 in St. Johannes. He died on 21 August 1798 at age 77. ELISABETH BARBARA SCHNEIDERS was born between 1730 and 1742 in Pommern. She was the daughter of Servatius SCHNEIDERS and Margaretha HENRICHS of Pommern. She died on 10 August 1797.

The eight known children of Joannes STEFFES and Elisabeth Barbara SCHNEIDERSwere:

20. CATHARINA STEFFES(Joannes, Heinrich) was baptized on 9 October 1714 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Joannes Anton Castor, and Catharina, daughter of Matthias Castors. She married Joannes Peter CASPER before 1735. She died on 1 December 1775 at age 61. JOANNES PETER CASPER was born before 1715. He was a Scabinus judici from 1779-1782. He died on 30 January 1782.

The nine known children of Catharina STEFFES and Joannes Peter CASPER were:

22. JOANNES STEFFES (Joannes, Heinrich) was baptized on 21 April 1718 in St. Johannes. His Godparents were Joannes Castor, adolescent, and Eulalia, wife of Joannes Castor. He could be the son of Joannes Steffes and Anna Maria Castor. NOTE: No death dates for parents, no Treis records after 1755. He married Anna Margaretha ANDREAE on 25 January 1742 in the Catholic Church, Bruttig. The marriage was recorded in Treis. ANNA MARGARETHA ANDREAE was born before 1720 in Bruttig, Rhineland.

The six known children of Joannes STEFFES and Anna Margaretha ANDREAE all born in Treis were:

23. CARL STEFFES (Joannes, Heinrich) was baptized on 27 March 1720 in St. Johannes. His Godparents were Carl Traben and Maria Margaretha, wife of Gerhard Bleser. He married Susana Elisabeth Dorothea ARENS, daughter of Peter ARENS and Maria Margaretha DEDERICHS, on 25 January 1745 in St. Johannes. The witnesses at ther marriage were Carl Castor and Conrad Klein. He died on 18 October 1794 in Treis at age 74. SUSANA ELISABETH DOROTHEA ARENS was baptized on 17 September 1720 in St. Johannes. Her Godparents were Susanna Elisabetha Dorothea, wife of Joannes Hoffmann, and Francis Georgius Traben of Boppard, for Carl Traben. She died on 18 February 1811 at age 90.

The nine known children of Carl STEFFES and Susana Elisabeth Dorothea ARENS were:

25. ANNA ELISABETHA STEFFES (Joannes, Heinrich) was baptized on 8 January 1724 in St. Johannes. She was a twin. Her Godparents were Henri Castor and Elisabeth, wife of Anton Castor. Anna was a Godmother on April 6, 1780 for Anna Elisabetha Conrath, the daughter of Herman Conrath and Maria Margaretha Steffes. She married Joannes Balthasar DEUTSCH, son of Joannes Adolph DEUTSCH and Maria Margaret FUCHS, on 9 November 1745 in St. Johannes. She married Joannes Conrath, son of Herman Anton Conrath and Anna Maria Francisca STURM, on 10 September 1748 in St. Joannes. She died on 19 April 1783 at age 59. JOANNES BALTHASAR DEUTSCH was baptized on 23 January 1719 in St. Joannes. His Godparents were Joannes Balthasar Fuchs and Catharina, wife of Joannes Caspar Wahls. He died on 18 June 1746 at age 27.
