Descendants of Ephraim Harrison and Margaret Kincaid The following information was complied from several sources, many thanks to Court Conkwright and Carolyn Miles for their patience, persistence and research with the Ephraim and Margaret (Kincaid) Harrison family.

Data below indicates that the Ephraim Harrison below was likely the son of William and Worlenda (Davis) Harrison.  Although there is not a will or deed or a written record that proves the relationship, I believe that there is enough evidence to document continue to research this family.

Ephraim Harrison was first taxed in Fallowfield Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania from 1804 - 1810, along with his father William Harrison and his brothers Bazel and Shadrack Harrison.  Bazel and Shadrack are both missing from the 1810 Federal Census, Bazel's biography states that they moved to Kentucky for about 2 years and then settled in Ohio.

I believe that Ephraim, the youngest son, probably stayed behind in Washington County, Pennsylvania after Bazel and Shadrack moved to Ohio and eventually settled in Trumbull County, Ohio.  Following the census data and tax records gets a little confusing, however, the records also help to establish which Ephraim Harrison was William and Worlenda's son.

There are two Ephraim Harrison's listed in the 1810 Federal Census who were possibly the son of William Harrison and the brother of Bazel and Joseph and Shadrack Harrison.  The Ephraim “Harris” who is listed in the 1810 Federal of Greene County, Pennsylvania was taxed in the same county as Ephraim Harrison in 1807 (1807 is the earliest year that exists at the Pennsylvania State Archives on microfilm, subsequent tax lists begin in the 1820’s).  Consequently, the Ephraim Harrison listed in Greene County, Pennsylvania in both the 1810 and 1820 Federal Census is about the correct age and had probably lived there as early as 1807 (the 1820 census of Greene County also listed the household of Noah Harrison, relationship unknown).

The second Ephraim Harrison was recorded in the 1810 Federal Census of Brooke County, Virginia (transcription of the 1810 Federal Census; (Brooke County, Virginia is south of Washington County, Pennsylvania and in 1850 became part of West Virginia).

Additionally, it should also be noted that the Moses Harrison who was recorded in the 1800 Federal Census of Somerset Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, departed Washington County, Pennsylvania at about the same time as Bazel Harrison and his brother, Shadrack Harrison.  It appears that this Moses Harrison also may have appeared in the 1810 Federal Census of Brooke County, Virginia and then later was recorded living in Smith Township, Belmont County, Ohio in the 1820 Federal Census (I have never been able to determine or establish a relationship to this Moses Harrison).

The 1830 Federal Census listed two Ephraim Harrison’s in Ohio.  The first was recorded in Union, Belmont County, Ohio (a Menoah Harrison was enumerated on the same page) and the second Ephraim Harrison was again recorded in Nottingham Township, Harrison County, Ohio (there were several Harrison’s listed in Harrison County, Ohio in 1830, however, Ephraim was the only Harrison listed in Nottingham Township).

The 1830 household of Ephraim Harrison in Nottingham Township, Harrison County, Ohio listed:

The 1840 Federal Census of Ohio again listed two Ephraim Harrison's, the first in Kirkwood Township, Belmont County, Ohio (a Noah Harris is also listed on the same page) and the second Ephraim Harrison (indexed as “Ephrain”) was recorded in Trumbull County, Ohio.  Living in the adjacent household to "Ephrain" Harrison in Trumbull, County, was Robert Erwin (recorded as "Ervine") who was husband of Ephraim's daughter, Diana Harrison (their marriage was recorded in Trumbull County, Ohio, on 26 November 1838).

Additionally in 1840, there was a Bassell Harrison recorded just two households above "Ephrain" Harrison, on the same page in Trumbull County.  I believe that this "Bassell" was probably Ephraim and Margaret Harrison's son (see below).

The 1840 household of "Ephrain" Harrison in Trumbull County listed (township not stated, however, "Youngstown" was written at the top of the page in the left margin; the 1840 households of Bassell Harrison and Robert "Ervine" listed on the same page are listed under their respective families below):

In the 1850 Federal Census, there were two Ephraim Harrison’s listed in Ohio, both recorded in Trumbull County, presumably they were father and son.  The first Ephraim Harrison, was age 67, a farmer, born in Maryland and his wife, Margaret Harrison, age 64, born in Pennsylvania, were recorded in District #143, Bristol, Trumbull County, Ohio, household #953 of 979.  The younger Ephraim Harrison, was recorded in household #965 of 971, Ephraim Harrison, age 23, farmer, born in Mahoning County, Ohio (Mahoning County was formed in February 1846, from Columbiana and Trumbull Counties) and Priscilla Harrison, age 18, born in Trumbull County, Ohio (Ephraim Harrison and Priscilla Underwood, marriage recorded in Trumbull County, Ohio, on 6 September 1849).

Sometime after 1850 Ephraim and his son Ephraim Harrison, Jr. moved to Indiana, where they both died and are buried in Mounts Run Cemetery in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana.  Family tradition says that Ephraim Sr. died on the 4th of July working in the fields, which indeed matches his marker.

Descendants of Ephraim Harrison and Margaret Kincaid
16.1 Martha Matilda Harrison, was born on 22 March 1804 in Pennsylvania and died on 15 November 1890 in Wood County, Ohio, she was buried on 16 November 1890 in City Cemetery, in North Baltimore, Wood County, Ohio.

Martha married John Bolen on 27 December 1827 in Harrison County, Ohio (marriage record).  He was born in about 1806 (1850 census shows his birth in about 1808) in Virginia and died on 20 October 1860 in Preble County, Ohio.

Her obituary contributed by Philip Bolen:

16.2 Verlinda Harrison, was born in about 1807 in Pennsylvania and died on 8 October 1857 in Hancock County, Indiana.  She married John Laport (alternate spellings include: Laporte, Laport etc.) on 16 March 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio.  John Laport was born in about 1805 in Ohio, the son of Abraham Laport and Margaret Blakely, he died in Henry County, Indiana.

From "The History of Harrison County, Ohio” biography of John Laport, page 176":

"John Laport married Miss Verlinda Harrison, second cousin of President of W. H. Harrison and daughter of Ephraim and Margaret ( Kincade) Harrison, of Pennsylvania.”

16.3 Mary Harrison, according to her obituary was born on 31 December in 1808 in Ohio (if she was born in 1808 she would have been born in Pennsylvania; the 1850 census data shows her birth in about 1810 or 1811, 1860 census also gives her birth in about 1811) and died on 6 January 1892.  She married John I. Poulson, on 30 July 1830 in Nottingham Township, Harrison County, Ohio by Justice of the Peace John Carson. John Poulson died on 5 January 1872.  Her obituary from the Indianian Republican dated 21 January 1892:

MARY HARRISON POULSON.
"Mary Harrison was born in Ohio December 31, 1808 the daughter of William and Margaret Harrison and was united in marriage to James J. Poulson July 1829.  They moved to Kosciusko County in 1839 where they lived until her death January 6, 1892, age 82 years, three months and six days.  Six boys and three girls were born to this union.  She was left a widow 1872.  She was identified with the M.E. Church and leaves three children, twenty grandchildren and eight great grandchildren to mourn her loss."

16.4 William Harrison, was born in about 1810 in what is now West Virginia or possibly in Ohio and may have died in about or before 1860.  Samuel Fansler, JP,  married William Harrison and Diantha Jane Dodge of Bristol on 11 February 1847 in Trumbull County, Ohio (Trumbull County Marriages 1844-1850, page 183, #4/231).  The marriage was witnessed by Robert Erwin, who married Diana Harrison and was William's brother-in-law.

16.5 Bazaleel W. Harrison, was born in about 1812 in Ohio (1860 census gives his birth in about 1814 in Ohio; 1870 and 1880 census data shows his birth in about 1807 in Pennsylvania).  He is an unconfirmed son, other than the similarity of his name to Ephraim's brother Bazel Harrison and his close proximity to Ephraim Harrison in the 1840 Federal Census, there is no concrete proof that he was Ephraim's son.

He married Eliza Ann Parker of Austintown, license dated 24 August 1838 (Trumbull County marriage Licenses 1837-1839, page 95).

16.6 John K. Harrison, was born in about 1816 in Ohio and according to his son Simon's biography died in 1867.  John married Mary Reepsumer on 16 December 1838 in Girard, Trumbull County, Ohio by Samuel McMillan, JP, (Trumbull County Marriage Licenses 1837-1839, page 150, #3/100).  Mary was born on 22 October 1818 Ohio and died on 19 February 1904 in Rushville, Sheridan County, Nebraska.

16.7 Diana Harrison, was born in about 1819 in Youngstown, Ohio and died in 1872 in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois, Diana is buried in Ramsey Cemetery in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois.

Diana Harrison of Youngstown married Robert Erwin on 24 November 1838 in Trumbull County, Ohio, by Samuel McMillan JP (Trumbull County Marriage Licenses 1837-1839, page 135 3/100).  He was the son of Joseph Erwin and Mary "Peggy" Osborn and was born in 1818 in Youngstown, Ohio.

Robert Kincaid Erwin died on 5 December 1875 in Effingham, Effingham County, Illinois.  He was buried on 7 December 1875 in Ramsey Cemetery with his wife Diana.

16.8 Ephraim Harrison Jr., was born in about 1827 in Ohio.  He married Priscilla Ann Underwood of Southington on 6 September 1849, by Samuel Fansler, JP (Trumbull  County Marriage Licenses 1844-1850, page 385 5/6).  In the 1850 Federal Census Ephraim and Priscilla were recorded living in Trumbull County, Ohio in household #965 of 971, Ephraim Harrison, age 23, farmer, born in Mahoning County, Ohio (Mahoning County was formed in February 1846, from Columbiana and Trumbull Counties) and Priscilla Harrison, age 18, born in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Ephraim Jr., along with his parents left Ohio and were living in Boone County, Indiana when he died in about 1857.  He is buried next to his father in Mounts Run Cemetery in Lebanon, Boone County, Indiana.  He is probably recorded as "Son of E. Harrison" in the cemetery record.
