The Tithe Applotment Books

The Tithes were a tax required to be paid by land occupiers to the Church of Ireland, regardless of the denomination of the taxpayer. The Tithe Applotments were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in Ireland. In Dromara Parish the lists were completed in 1826. Just the person responsible for the tithe was listed for the property.

According to "A Genealogist`s Guide to Discovering Your Irish Roots" by Dwight A. Radford and Kyle J. Betit, "The Ordnance Survey in Dublin officially set the boundaries and standardized the townland name during the 1830`s, after the Tithe Books were compiled in some civil parishes."

After the name is the land measurement in acre, rood and perch. Then to the far right is the tithe assessed to the property in pounds, shillings, and pence.
