Coney, Van C. Confederate Infantry 16th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry.
Companies Summit Rifles & Quitman Guards were organized as Companies A 7 E of the 16th MS Reg and reported to Corinth.
The 16th MS transferred to VA in July 1861 and fought there until the end of the war. The 16th MS Reg. fought in Front royal and Winchester in the Shenandoah Campaign of 1862; at Cross Key, Mechanicsville, Cold harbor, and Malvern Hill; At 2nd Manassas, Harper's Ferry, and Sharpsburg (Antietam) in the Maryland campaign; at Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsiville; In the PA campaign of 1863 terminating at Gettysburg 1-3, 1863; In the Wilderness campaign of May 1864 including Spottslyvania where the regiment suffered severe causalities; and finally in the spring campaign of 1865 in which the 16th MS defended Fort Gregg against the final assault on Richmond. Seven Quin relatives served in the Quitman Guards; four were wounded; one was taken prisoner. Van C. Coney was elected 2nd LT on Mar 26, 1862, and was Company Commander at Chancellorsville. Wounded at Sharpsburg, Sept. 17, 1862.

Mrs. Sophia Weston Middlebrooks, daughter of John and Elizabeth Shell, was born in Mecklenburg county, Virginia, March 31, 1789. She joined the M. E. Church in Newberry District, S. C., whither parents had moved from Virginia. In 1808 she was married to Zera Middlebrooks, late of Newton county, Ga., and died at the house of her son, Dr. A. C. Middlebrooks, in Doraville, DeKalb county, Ga., on 10th April 1877.
