The county is the largest in Ireland, part of Munster. The major towns are Cork city, mallow, Mitchelstown, Youghal, Kantruck, Cobn, Fermoy, Kinsale, Clonakilty, Skibbereen, Bantry and Bandon.
The county was one of the worst affected areas in the Famine of 1845-7. In 1841 the population was 854,000. Ten years later, it had fallen to 650,000. More than 150,000 persons died between 1845 and 1850. Today there are about 404,000.
County Cork is in the diocese of Cork, Cloyne, Ross, Lismore, Ardfert and Aghadoe, and Limerick. This information is required to research Marriage Liscenses and Wills.
Poor Law Unions were named after a large town or the city itself. These later became the General Registrar's Districts. These districts are the areas within which births, deaths and marriages were collected.
Our current holdings for this County are 'slim'. I have done little research in this county except for validating that my ggrandfather John RYAN was a professor in St Colman's College, Fermoy, during the 1870s.If you wish to contribute any material, regarding any part of the county, email me @ [email protected]
