Dale, Theodore Roosevelt "Ted"
12 March
1918 - 9 September 2011
Colonel US Air Force; World War II, Korea, Vietnam
Ted graduated in 1941 with a degree in education from Ohio State University
and received a US Army Reserve commission as a second lieutenant in field
artillery.
World War II: Ted enlisted in U.S. Army on 1 July 1941 near
the beginning of American involvement in World War II and served for two
years in the European Theatre. In 1943 he transferred to the Army Air Corps
and trained as a pilot on the B-17E bomber. He was assigned to a bomber
wing in England, flying three bombing missions before the war ended. His
next assignment was to the Army of Occupation as squadron commander at the
US Air Base in Erlangen, Germany. In 1948, after Stalin instituted the Berlin
Blockade, Ted flew the C-47 Skytrain ("Gooneybird") "24/7" during the Berlin
Airlift supplying food and supplies to the now stranded West Germans.
Korea: From 1951-1953, Ted was assigned to Joint Task Force-3 to document
the Atomic Bomb Tests in the Eniwetok Atoll (Marshall Islands) in the Pacific
Ocean. The documents were only recently declassified as top secret.
B-26
and F-84 Platforms: Following six months of training at the Air Command
and Staff School in Alabama Maj. Dale was ordered to Osan Air Base in South
Korea in July of 1953, assigned to the Fifth Air Force flying the B-26 Night
Intruder, a twin engine bomber. Among Col. Dale's most dangerous missions
was the flying of 'time and distance' nighttime, low-level bombing and strafing
missions. It was during his Korean War service that Col. Dale learned to
fly the F-84 fighter jet.
Korean Armistice Commission (1954-55): During
the Military Armistice Commission hearings, Col. Dale was assigned as chief
administrator for all commission meetings. His base camp was in the 'Apple
Orchard,' 20 miles from Panmunjom. The meetings were attended by the Chinese,
North and South Koreans and representatives including US Air Force, Navy
and Army translators and stenographers reported to Col Dale. He was responsible
for transmitting minutes of the meetings, about 40 pages each night to the
office of the president.
During the hearings, Col. Dale traveled 20 miles
in winter weather by Willis jeep from base housing to the meetings. By the
time he returned to base at night, Ted shared with friends that all of the
food was gone. "I lost 15 pounds and the road we traveled was a narrow dirt
road, rutted and filled with potholes. On the way we used a shotgun to shoot
pheasants. We accumulated 11 with plans to have a feast, but when we asked
the cook to prepare them we learned that they had been fed to a group of
dignitaries from the U.S."
Strategic Air Command 1954-1965: He was assigned
to the Strategic Air Command, as wing commander and was stationed in the
US to fly the new B47 Stratojet throughout the Cold War for 11 years.
1965-1968: One of Col. Dale's most demanding assignments was as deputy director
of programs for U.S. Air Force in Europe for three years.
LRAFB 1968-
1970: Ted's Air Force career culminated with his service as base commander
of the Little Rock Air Force Base, Jacksonville, Arkansas, retiring on 1
August 1970. Col Dale flew the KC-135 tanker and in March of 1970, the headquarters
of the 64th Tactical Airlift Wing arrived and took over duties as the base's
host unit. Along with the 64th came the 4442nd Combat Crew Training Wing.
Colonel Dale supervised the arrival and implementation of the now famous
C-130 Hercules, a small, agile transport plane, which continues to serve
the needs of the U.S. military around the world.
After 30 years in the
Air Force, he became a real estate broker retiring in 1982. (Biography by
his wife, Dolores "Dee" Brazil Dale.)
Colonel Dale is buried in Peeler
Bend Cemetery, Saline County, Arkansas.

7 August
1923 - 17 May 2004
Army, World War II
I was drafted into the Army
and was sent to Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, for eight weeks of basic training.
From Camp Chaffee the Army sent me to Camp Atterbury, Indiana, for advanced
training. I was attached to the 1st Army, 106th Infantry Division, 423rd
Infantry Regiment, Company M. We were sent overseas landing in France. We
went into Belgium where I was captured by the Germany during the Battle
of the Bulge. We were marched to a great distant, then loaded into cattle
cars. While we were on the train, we were strafed by the American fighters.
We were kept in basements of bombed-out buildings and our guards were the
German S.S. Troops. We arrived at Stalag Luft 4-B. Here we were assigned
work details. Two hundred of us were sent to Glena, Germany, where we became
factory workers. We were fed brown bread and a bowl of turnip soup a day.
I might add, there were no turnips, just soup. On April 28, 1945, the 14th
Armored Division rescued us. (At that time I weighed 97 pounds.) We all
were sent to a field hospital, then put on a place for France. They loaded
us on a hospital ship headed for the states. I was discharged from the Army
and returned to my home in Traskwood.

Harris, J. D.
22 January 1923 - 17 November 2006
US Army Air Forces World War II; Purple
Heart 1
J. D. entered
the Army Air Corps in January, 1943. His training as a radio operator and
upper turret gunner took him to several air bases, especially in the western
part of the United States. In July, 1944, he was assigned to the 484th bomber
group with the 15th Air Force in Italy. It was 20 August 1944, on his 21st
mission, that his B-24 Liberator bomber took a direct hit from ground flak
over the target near Szolnok, Hungary. Only minutes before the burning,
crippled plane was blown apart, Harris was able to escape from his plane.
He was floating down to earth in his parachute when his knee was shattered
by fire from enemy ground troops. Upon landing, German troops arrived quickly
to take him prisoner. Four of the crew of ten were not as fortunate. They
went down with their plane.
On 3 September 1944, Harris' parents were
notified by the War Department (via the International Red Cross) that their
son, J. D. was missing in action. On 11 November 1944, Harris was declared
a U. S. prisoner of the Germans.
Harris was held in various prison camps
in Hungary and Germany, although most of his encampment was spent in Stalag
4, a German camp northeast of Stettin, Germany, which was near the Baltic
Sea. As a prisoner, J. D. kept a brief account of some of his day-to-day
activities and experiences in a "notebook" made from empty cigarette packs.
To keep the guards from taking his "diary" Harris often hid his information
in his boot. Harris was released from prison to the American forces on 28
April 1945.
Mr. Harris was the owner of Harris Shoe Store in Benton,
Saline County, Arkansas, until 1985 when he sold the business. My mother
worked for him as a clerk from about 1965 until he sold the store.

Mason, George Wilbur
9 September

Mason enlisted into the Army Air Corps on August
7, 1942, and after training in the states, went overseas to England. He
was attached to the 95th Bomb Group, 412nd Bomb Squadron, 8th Air Force.
The promotion of George W. Mason from sergeant to staff sergeant has been
announced at the Eighth Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress Base. Sgt. Mason
is a member of the Fortress Group which led the first American bombing attack
on targets in Berlin and which was cited by the president for its outstanding
bombing assault on railroads marshalling yards at Munster, Germany, in October
1943. (Benton Courier, December 28, 1944, page 1)
Mr. and Mrs.
Emmett Mason as yet do not have definite information regarding their son,
George Mason, bombardier, who was reported missing January 10, 1945, when
his plane crashed over Dusseldorf, Germany. The pilot of the lane, who had
returned to his home in Wisconsin, has communicated with the Masons and
states that he, being in the front of the plane, was unable to tell them
what happened to George. Two bodies found after the crash were identified.
The pilot has given the names of the other survivors of the crash, and by
contacting them, they hope to learn the fate of their son. George Wilbur
Mason was listed as killed in action on January 10, 1945, on his 39th mission.
(Also from the Benton Courier.)

his commission in July, 1942. He was attached to the 303rd Bomb Group and,
sent overseas to England and was assigned to the 8th Air Force. On his third
mission as a bombardier, 23 January 1943, his plane was shot down. McCright
and two others were the only members of the crew to bail out of the B-17
bomber. He was captured by the Germans and later sent to Stalag Luft III
POW Camp in Sagan, Germany. After the war, a movie was made about this POW
camp, The Great Escape, starring Steve McQueen and James Garner.
While in this camp, McCright kept a ledger on all the American personnel.
This ledger proved to be invaluable to the War Department later in the search
for casualties (records of the war injuries were found in this ledger.)
McCright and the other POWs were marched to Mooseburg, Germany, where they
were rescued by General Patton's Army. He was discharged from the Army and

After training in the states, I was shipped overseas to Company I, 4th Infantry
Division, 1st Army. We were shipped to France. We went through France into
Belgium, and this is where I was wounded. I was sent to a field hospital
in Belgium, then sent to England. When I recovered from my wounds, I was
sent back to Belgium, attached to the 755th Railroad Shop Battalion. When
the war in Europe ended, I was shipped back to the states and discharged
