Taken from Old & New Furrows - The Story of Rosthern: Before the white man came to the area, the Stoney Hill site was the overnight camping spot for bands of Indians travelling between Prince Albert and North Battleford. Canadian land agents visited the US telling people of this new frontier in hopes of attracting settlers to the North West.

Late in 1898, Conrad Koenig, Sr. and John Reinwald, Jr. came to Rosthern looking for the land they had been told about. They found their homesteads at Stoney Hill and wrote back to their families to follow. That first summer was spent building shelter and breaking some land on which to grow food for the coming winter.

During the first years other settlers followed from Nebraska including the families of George Schmidt, John Schmidt, Philip Lanz, George Lanz, Louis Zulaf, William Zulauf, Jacob Aebig, John Reinwald, Sr. and Andrew Hoffer. The population was growing, more land was being broken and Stony Hill was developing into a community.

     Phillip Reinwald was born on 8 September 1874 in North Easthope, Perth, Ontario, Canada.^1,2 He was the son of Conrad Reinwald and Anna Elizabeth Habermehl. Phillip appeared on the 4 April 1881 census of Ellice, Perth, Ontario, Canada, in the household of his parents Conrad and Anna Elizabeth Habermehl; The household is listed as German in origin.³ Phillip appeared on the on 22 April 1891 census of Ellice, Perth, Ontario, in the household of his father Conrad Reinwald; William is living a few houses from his father in the Charles Klink household. Conrad is living next door in the Jacob Erb household. Elizabeth is not listed in the household as she died in 1889.¹ Phillip Reinwald died on 7 June 1894 in Ellice, Perth, Ontario, at the age of 19 The death certificate lists Phillip as a weaver's son.⁴
