Alex Bailey and Margaret Burns were married April 6, 1822. With this uncle and aunt, Martha Shoults lived after her 12th year of age. They, with a large party, left Missouri in August 1852 for California and were six months on the way. They also had with them a sister and two brothers of Martha Shoults. Andrew Bailard was also in this party. They had with them a family of colored servants, and they brought out with then a herd of cattle and many horses. Once the cattle were stampeded by Indians, and this necessitated a delay of several days. Catharine Shoults rode on horseback almost all the way, and an Indian who wished to buy her followed the train for several days so it was necessary to guard her. This division of the party purchased land in San Mateo county, and land there is still owned by Shoults descendants.
Andrew Bailard and Catharine Shoults were married Jan. 8, 1859, (Martha Catharine Shoults). In 1868, they with six children went to Santa Barbara. The next year Alex and Margaret Bailey followed, purchasing land adjoining the Bailards. Those entire tracts at Carpinteria are owned by children of Andrew and Catharine Bailard at date (1933). Andrew Bailard foresaw much for Santa Barbara. He was one of its foremost citizens. In those days the wharf was so short that passengers had to be lowered into small boats and then hoisted up to the wharf. Alex Bailey was taken over in a large chair which to this day is kept by B. F. Bailard as a souvenir. Six horse stages carried mail and passengers. In August 1887 the first train some into Santa Barbara. We rode on it. It was 14 years later that trains ran to San Francisco.
