Recently, I had the opportunity to take some photographs in the Pioneer Cemetery in Brownsville, Linn Co., Oregon where some of my ancestors are interred. One tombstone, in the background, intrigued me. It was of an ALCORN and I used to have a friend with that surname. This lead to some interesting stories which in turn lead to this web page.

Photos of many of the monuments of the Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery are online at FindAGrave.. (fg) at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi

Several sources are not listed in the references. These include:
... (bi) birth record of the individual or of a child of the individual.
... (cem) records from the cemetery, either directly or from listings on the internet.
... (di) death index for the indicated state such as California and Oregon.
... (igi) International Genealogical Index of the LDS church at Family Search Internet.
... (mi) Marriage records for the indicated area.
... (ssdi) the Social Security Death Index available several sites on-line.

.... Timothy Marshall ALCORN, son of John Marshall Alcorn and Eliza Adeline MARSHALL (heh), born 16 May 1876 (ww1,di) Wayne Co, KY (dc of Mary at fg), died 6 Dec 1961 Stanislaus Co., CA (di), married apparently first 28 June 1905 Linn Co., OR (mi)
.... Esther BOWERS, daughter of William Bower , born May 1878 (c1900) Lincoln, NE (dc of daughter Mary at fg), died 12 April 1917 Linn Co., OR (di), interred Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery Lot 4 34'x11' (W.E. Bowers) (bpc). Timothy married second about 1925 probably CA
.... Marion B. (c1930) possibly Marion BOEHUE (bi Stanley) but apparently Marian BOEHNE (www), daughter of Edwin Boehne (c1900) and Lucy BARROWS (lks), born ca 1886 Nebraska (c1930) or March 1885 (c1900).

... Notes: Timothy was in Kentucky (c1880) but he and a younger brother, James M. Alcorn, had moved to Saline Co., KS by 1900 (c1900). It is unclear when he was in Linn Co as he is not in the 1905 census. Apparently the family was in Shelton WA in the fall of 1906 (owba). By 1910, the family must have traveled back to Oregon about 1908 where a son was born then moved to Bremerton WA where Timothy was teaching school (c1910). Timothy stated in his world war 1 registration in 1918 that he was a farmer living in Brownsville, Linn Co OR and listed J. M. Alcorn of Huntington Beach CA as his nearest relative (ww1). By 1920 he is listed as a widow in California where he is teaching at a high school (c1920). The 2 boys are living with his brother also in California (c1920). By 1930, Timothy had remarried and had another child and the 2 older ones were with the family (c1930). He is now an insurance agent (c1930). Stanley Alcorn who became well know for his research on plant diseases is the son of the second marriage. It is possible that other children were born to Esther between 1910 and 1916 but there is no evidence of that. There may also have been children after 1930.

... Children:
....i. Wayne ALCORN or Wayne B. ALCORN, born 1907 (c1910) or 1 Nov 1906 (di) Shelton WA (owba), died 2 May 2002 address Modesto, Stanislaus Co., CA (ssdi). He attended Modesto High School, Modesto Junior College and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. He was a ranger at Yellowstone National Park, then a ranger-naturalist at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Bryce Canyon and Glen Canyon (owba). Apparently he was a recognized photographer and some of his works are included in books and web sites. Search Google and Google images for some of these. He also authored at least one book. He married after 1930
.......... Gertrude BOEHNE, daughter of Ralph Boehne and Mabel STONE and grandaughter of Edwin (lks), born 27 July 1910 NE, died 10 Dec 1995 Stanislaus CA(di), address Modesto (ssdi). Mrs. Alcorn ... "lived in Modesto 24 years. She was a homemaker. She spent 36 years in the National Park Service with her husband, and served in Yellowstone, Sequoia, Bryce Canyon and Rocky Mountain national parks before retiring in 1971". (ogba).
....ii. Earl ALCORN (ssdi) or Earl Marshall ALCORN (di) or Earl M. ALCORN, born ca 1909 (c1910), apparently 2 Aug 1908, died 23 Sep 1956 San Joaquin Co., CA (di), married after 1930
.......... Dorthy MACKEDON or Dorthy Elizabeth MACKEDON, born 4 Oct 1911 NV, died 14 Jan 1996 San Joaquin Co., CA (di), apparently the daughter of John MacKedon and Hazel (c1920) or Hazel ANDERSON (dbs).
....iii. Mary ALCORN or Mary Esther ALCORN or Mary Esther Bowers ALCORN (fg), born 3 Apr 1917 (bpc), died 25 Apr 1918 Linn Co OR (di,dc at fg), interred Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery (bpc).

********** BOWERS **********

.... Joseph BOWERS or Joseph Tompkins BOWERS (ms) is apparently the father of three sons who came to Brownsville, Linn Co., Oregon some time between 1900 and 1909. The three are interred in the Brownsville Pioneer Cemetery. Their mother was Almeria STEVENS (ms) or Maria STEVENS (hsn). 'According to the "History of Wesley Chapel" (date and author unknown), "The four Bowers brothers, William, Ed, Dudley and Arthur were leaders in the church" in the 1890s.' (ms). Wesley Chapel is a Methodist church in Lancaster County, Nebraska. We will probably never know why they moved to the Brownsville area.

George is listed there as an apprentice mechanic (c1870), mechanic (c1880), mechanic and superintendent of a large factory. (hsn) and in 1887, he is listed as electrician and manufacturer of dynamos (cd). He is listed in the 1880 census as living with Jonas A. MARSHALL and Abbie B., apparently his brother-in-law and sister (c1880). Shortly later, Jonas and Abbie moved to Washington D. C. (hsb) but George is still in Fitchburg State: MA 1887-1890 (cd). In 1900, he is married and in Washington DC as an electrician (c1900). He must have been on a visit to his brothers in Linn Co Oregon when he died. Sarah is listed as a widow in the 1910 census which helps to confirm the connection.

Note regarding Harry P. Bowers.
..... Although it seems unlikely the above Harry P. Bowers is involved, it is possible he is.
.....The Washington birth records for Washington at Ancestry have an entry that a Lillian Stewart had a child Harry Stowart Bowers, undoubtedly Harry Stewart Bowers, whose father was Harry P. Bowers. The birth was 21 April 1913, Seattle, King Co., WA (bi). A Harry P. could not be identified in the 1910 or 1920 census in Washington and Harry S. was not identified in the census 1920 or 1930 and neither Harry was found in the Washington death index 1909-1929. However, a William S. Bowers, born that date, died 13 April 2000 in Seattle WA (ssdi) and very possibly is the same individual. Further, a William Bowers was found in the 1930 Seattle census with a mother Lillian and as a stepson of James Warner. This William was listed as age 15, a bit off for a 1913 birth. This Lilliam was listed as born about 1897 and first married at age 17 (c1930). She could not be identified as a Lillian Stewart but there were several of about the right age in Pennsylvania. A Lillian E. Warner, born 12 Jun 1896 died 17 Jan 1989, address Seattle (ssdi) would likely be this person. It lists William's father as born England and Lilliam is listed as born PA (c1930). That would seem to indicate that the Harry of Brownsville was not connected.
..... There is no Lillian Stewart in the 1910 Seattle census, but there is a Lyllin Stewart, daughter of Jay H and Clara M. (c1910). She clearly might have been the mother of the Harry S. Bower of interest. By 1920, she is married to a Michael Loeb or Max Loeb (c1920) and has 2 children both of whose births are recorded in the Washington records. In one, the mother is Lyllian Stewart and the other she is listed as Lillian Stewart. None of the Loebs or Jay Stewart could be identified in the 1930 census. Since Lyllian Stewart Loeb was born in IL she would not seem to be the Lillian with William Bower in 1930. One child, Felix Stewart Loeb, born 2 Aug 1917, is almost certainly the Stewart F Loeb, born that date, died 8 Apr 2002 address Rohnert Park, Sonoma Co., CA (ssdi) and who married 4 Dec 1970 San Francisco City Mirra Scaparone (mi). This was probably not his first marriage. There is probably a connection to a Michael Stewart Loeb, born 12 Nov 1981 Los Angeles Co., CA, died 19 April 1982 Los Angeles Co., CA (di), mothers surname Ballou (bi) or Ballov (di).
