INTRODUCTION

This church was first organized about 1830 as the Hickory Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church and reorganized in church capacity on October 5, 1899. Now called Hickory Grove House of Prayer, it is located off old HWY 68 between Madisonville and Tellico Plains on County Road 766 in Mt. Vernon Community. Much gratitude is due Edith Ward, co-host for Monroe CO, TN homepage, for providing data in addition to our cemetery survey. Edith transcribed and sent entries of deaths recorded in Hickory Grove Church records. She writes, "The L & N Railroad track to Tellico Plains was built over some of the graves at the top of the cemetery. The graves were never moved by the railroad when it was built." Since many graves in this cemetery are unmarked or marked only by rough field stones without inscriptions, church death records may provide the only clue as to the identity of those interred. Edith says that the persons listed are most probably buried there even though church records do not state per se that the member is definitely interred on the grounds. "Still," she advises, "they are a good source for death dates if a grave or death record cannot be found!" Therefore, these persons are listed below along with those marked by inscribed tombstones. However, they are identified as having no tombstone. See comment sections below for data on deaths recorded only in Hickory Grove Church records. Edith provided additional records from Bob Taylor Lee, Jr.'s files. Many, many thanks, Edith!
