John H. Graham

John H. Graham, born c. 1800 VA., married Elizabeth Garnand born c. 1808 VA., daughter of George Adam Garnand and Susan Kefauver, in November 1824 Botetourt Co., VA.

Adam Garnand and John H. Graham moved to Montgomery Co., VA. It is unknown if they moved together or if John follow his father-in-law later.

John is found on the Montgomery Co. tax list from 1830 to 1838, 1839 to 1840 his presents is unknown before appearing in 1841 Roanoke Co., VA.

Known children of John and Elizabeth are James W., John R., Eliza, George W., Simon Peter, Susan M. and Charles Edward.

Except for James W., this family is found on the 1850 Roanoke Co. VA Census. James went to the gold rush.

John is listed on the Roanoke tax list date of March 24, 1857, however a court document dated February 1857 states John, a convict, is in prison. The next tax list dated April 1, 1858 is listing Elizabeth as being responsible person for taxes. John died c. 1858.

When Elizabeth died in March 1862 the dower of 90 acres reverted back to the estate to help pay off the debts. John H. was heavy in debt before his imprisonment and death. The purpose of the court action of February 1857 was to collect the debts by selling off all the land owned and personal property own by John and his heirs.
