1.  Thomas SKAGGS (4437); born circa 1670;[1] married Mary Thear (4438) before 1700.[2]

 

     Mary THEAR (4438) was born circa 1670.[3]

     Children of Thomas Skaggs (4437) and Mary Thear (4438) were:

+         2.        i.    James (4313), born circa 1700 in Tazewell, VA; married Rachel Moredock (4314).

 

Generation Two

 

2.  James SKAGGS (4313); born circa 1700 in Tazewell, VA;[4] married Rachel Moredock (4314) circa 1725;[5] died 1781.[6]

     James Skaggs was mentioned several times in the Augusta Co. and Montgomery Co., VA land records.

     "1751, JAMES SKEGS, 82 acres Meadow Creek, branch of New, patent 1756."   Meadow Creek is in Radford area of Montgomery Co., VA (Augusta Co., VA in 1756).[7]

     "1751, JAMES SKEGGS, farmer, from Francis Reilly, 100 acres Little River." Augusta Co., VA.[8]

     "1754, JAMES SCAGS (Skeggs) from William Pellum, 134 acres on Meadow Creek of New River, patent to Pellum 1753."  Augusta Co., VA.[9]

     "1754, JAMES SKEGGS from Daniel Ratcliff, 104 acres patent to Samuel Ratcliff, 1753." Augusta Co., VA.[10]

     "April 26, 1769, JAMES SCAGGS (the longer), 350 acres corner James Scaggs, Junr., and James Scaggs, Senr."  Montgomery Co., VA.[11]

 

     Rachel MOREDOCK (4314) was born after 1704. She is in the Montgomery Co., VA land records, "1783, RACHEL SCAGGS, 150 acres on Commissioners certificate 1781, land on Little River, branch of New River, transferred to Henry Skaggs, 1784."[12]   She died after 1783 in Montgomery Co., VA.[13],[14]

     Children of James Skaggs (4313) and Rachel Moredock (4314) were as follows:

+         3.        i.    Henry (4439), born 1726; married Mary ? (4452).

           4.        ii.    James (4440); born 1728;[15] married Susanna ? (5404) circa 1753;[16] died October 9, 1820 in Green, KY.[17]

                                    James Skaggs was mentioned numerous times in the Augusta Co. and Montgomery Co., VA land records.

     "1769, JAMES SKEGGS, JR. from James Skeggs, Sr. and Rachel, 104 acres on Meadow Creek patent to Samuel Ratcliff, 1753."  Augusta Co., VA.[18]

        "1778, JAMES SCAGGS, from William Preston, executor of John Buchanan, Gent. deceased, 68 acres on Meadow Creek patent to Buchanan 1763."   Record could refer to father.  Montgomery Co., VA.[19]

        “1779, JAMES SKAGGS from William Buchanan for 550 pounds, 100 acres south side Wood's (New) River, below mouth of Little River and 50 acres north side opposite the 100 acres patented 1753 to John Buchanan, father of William."  Montgomery Co., VA.[20]

        James Skaggs was listed as selling 68 acres to Richard Whitt in 1779 at Montgomery Co., VA.[21]

        "1782, JAMES SKEGGS from Albert Bright and wife, Susanna, 100 acres on south side of Wood's River, below the mouth of Little River, and 50 acres opposite, the same Skaggs sold Bright."  Montgomery Co., VA.[22]

        "1782, JAMES SCAGGS, 256 acres assignee of John W. Howe, assignee of William Akers, north side of New River; 1783, 215 acres assignee of Walter Crockett, attorney for James Clerk, west side of New River, corner to William Christian."  Montgomery Co., VA.[23]

        "1783, ANDREW CASSIDAY, 148 acres on Commissioners certificate 1783 assigned by James Skeggs who was an assignee of Moses Skeggs, east side of New River.”  at Montgomery Co., VA.[24]

        He was mentioned as selling 100 acres to William Cassiday (brother-in-law) in 1784 in Montgomery Co., VA.[25]

        "1785, ISAAC SKEGGS, 100 acres assigned by Peter Brown, at the head of Stroud's Branch, adjoining Conrad Wall and James Skaggs."  Montgomery Co., VA.[26]

        "James Skaggs and Susanna" listed as selling a large amount of land to James McCorkle.  Susanna is James Skagg's wife (see 1787 land record). Or it could refer to James, the son of Henry and his wife.  I have been putting this time frame of land records with this James because it looks like he was selling his father's estate in 1785 at Montgomery Co., VA.[27]

        He was listed as selling 100 acres to Richard Whitt from "part of the old ferry place on the west side of the New River where Skaggs now lives" in 1786 at Montgomery Co., VA.[28]

        He was listed (with Susanna) as selling 50 acres to Hezekiah Whitt in 1787 at Montgomery Co., VA.[29]

        He was listed as selling 30 acres adjoining Skagg's patent land to Andrew Cassiday in 1787 at Montgomery Co., VA.[30]

        “1787, CONRAD WALL and JAMES SALLERS (Sallust) from James Skaggs and wife Susanna, 271 acres on New River, part of the old ferry place, 65 acres and then 206 acres granted 1785 adjoining the old ferry tract, total 271 with a reservation of 5 acres for Skeggs use, which land lies above the head of a spring branch that runs to the River, to include the spring in any manner that Andrew Cassiday and James Skags may think proper."  Montgomery Co., VA.[31]

        "1787, JOHN INGLES from James Skaggs, 175 acres on west side of New River."  Montgomery Co., VA.[32]

+         5.      iii.    Charles (4441), born 1729; married Elizabeth Thompson (4457).

+         6.       iv.    Susannah (973), born 1730; married Richard Whitt (972).

+         7.       v.    John (4442), born 1732; married Catharine ? (4462).

+         8.       vi.    Richard (4443), born 1734; married Elizabeth Wells? (4465).

+         9.     vii.    Jacob (4444), born 1736; married Mary Francis Samples (4467).

         10.     viii.    Moses (4445);[33] born 1737;[34] married Elizabeth ? (4446) circa 1767;[35] died 1806 in Green Co., KY.[36]

     He was mentioned as the owner of land before assigning it to brother James.  See James Skeggs 1783 land record in 1783 at Montgomery Co., VA.[37]

         11.       ix.    Elizabeth (4449); born 1741;[38] married John Hankins (--?--) (4450) circa 1771.[39]

+       12.       x.    Nancy (4451), born 1742; married William Meredith (4469).

         13.       xi.    Lydia (4447); born 1745;[40] married Mathias Harman (4448), son of Adam Harman Sr. (5408) and Louisa Katrina (5409), circa 1760;[41] died 1814.[42]
