Thomas(b1730c)Tennant & wife Judith Butler

Thomas and Judith are particularly important because of their sons. Thomas founded the Canadian Branch, Robert (99%certain) was the line to the emigrants to Bolton, England and Richard may have founded the family of Tennant's still living in the Co. Carlow.

According to the book "Carlow to Lanark"(C2L) Thomas Tennant married Judith Butler and had 6 children the earliest idenified birth being Richard in 1748 making Thomas to be be born c1730. Thomas was either a stonemason (which fits the date Ballintemple House was being built for the Butlers) or according to another Canadian source he was in charge of the horses. Both sources refer to Judith being disinherited because of marrying Thomas, perhaps because he was of a different class or perhaps because he was descended from an English soldier who had fought against the Irish and the Anglo Norman Butlers. Thomas and Judith were buried in the churchyard at Aghade but so far the grave has not been found.

The churchyard does contain a stone with dates for the death of son Richard and grandson Thomas. Unfortunatly page 11 of C2L appears to have quoted both these dates incorrectly and contradicts page 7 where Richard is more correctly quoted as dying in 1771. Baby Thomas is quoted on the same page as being baptised in Dec 1774 thus agreeing with the stone that he died at 6 mnths in 1775 but contradicting page 11. The age of Richard is debatable the stone appears to say 23 perhaps 25.
