Augusta Wille came with her parents to the United States from Pomerania, Prussia. They came aboard the sailing vessel "Sylvester," arriving in New York on September 8, 1843 from Stettin, Prussia. She was the youngest of eight children, having fair skin with brown wavy hair and brown eyes. She was slight and dainty in her youth, but took on considerable weight in later years.
Despite all the hardships Augusta had to endured in the early days of her marriage, and despite the sadness of losing five children prematurely, she had an angelic personality and remained a cheerful and faithful wife. She had a clear voice with beautiful pitch and often led the singing in the church, especially at Kirchhayn where they had neither organ or piano.
We have two dates for her birth. Margaret Baird lists it as May 8, 1836, while Dolores Swaney lists it as April 29, 1836, stating that she obtained the date from church records of Kolzow, Kreis Usedom-Wollin, Pomerania on file with the LDS church as File #1273040. Her tombstone in the Ninth St. Cemetery in Logansport, IN is no help, just listing the year of birth: 1836. Her death certificate on file with the Cook Co., IL Clerk's office, shows her birthdate as May 8,1836. Difference in birth dates may reflect a difference or change in the calendars used in the two countries.
