The Camley Story

The Camley name has been a victim of creative spelling. On the branch I am referring to, it was spelled "Cambley" on the 1861 census for Bromley Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. By 1871 the name became "Cameley"; and finally, in 1881, shows up as "Camley". Other records indicate the spelling as Camilly. There is also a likelihood that the name was spelled with the prefix "Mc" or "Mac".

The 1871 census of Bromley, North Renfrew, Ontario shows Owen and Mary Camley as well as Mary, Patrick, and Hugh all living with James and Mary Ellen Camley (nee Clancy) and their children. Owen and Mary were the parents of Patrick, Mary, Hugh, and James. Whether or not Terrence was also a child of Owen and Mary was difficult to confirm. Both James and Terrence were from County Down, Ireland. Land records indicate they settled lots 14 and 16 in Bromley. It appeared that they were brothers, but...

There had been speculation that the two Bresnahan children, Thomas and Johanna, residing with Terrence and Mary Camley (1861 Canada census) may have been somehow related to either Terrence or Mary (nee Quigley). Finally, I stumbled across several records for a number of events (births, marriages and a petition), one of which was the marriage of Ann Camley and Thomas Bresnahan (he appears to have been a descendant of one of Peter Robinson's settlers) in Corkery (now West Huntley), Carleton County, Ontario. {Actually Ann was a previously unknown family member.}

The marriage of James and Mary Ellen Clancy indicated the same "Camley" parents; and the baptisms revealed that Terrence and James, plus their respective spouses, were godparents for each other's children.

Now we know that this family was in Canada by the mid-1840s, just not in Renfrew County by then. We still have not verified that Thomas and Johanna were the children of Ann and Thomas...but the search continues in Carleton and Lanark Counties.

Also note that there was a Mary Camley born in Kilkeel, County Down, Ireland in 1867; and her parents were Hugh Camley and Anne Macartan. Hugh Camley then appears on the 1871 Bromley census. Was he the same person?
