It is said that Laban Horton and Martha Bishop were married at the Alcovy River (between Monticello and Porterdale, GA), with Laban and Martha on one side, and the Justice of the Peace on the other side, the water being too high for them to cross!

They are listed on the 1850 census of Newton Co, GA. He was listed as a farmer. They had 3 slaves, and owned property worth $4000.

In the 1860 census of Newton Co, GA, Newton Factory Township, he was a farmer and owned real estate worth $4000 and personal property worth $2560.

On Nov 8, 1860, Laban Horton was admitted to the State Insane Asylum in Milledgeville. It is believed that he was still there when he died in June of 1862.

From a paper in his hospital file:[2]Laban Horton, Lunatic from Newton County, native of Georgia. Age about 40 years. Duration of insanity, 10 years, or more. Gradually developed. Cause unknown. Hereditary predisposition supposed to exist. He was married about 15 years ago. His wife and himself being on one side of the Alcovy River and the Justice who married them on the other side, the water being too high for them to cross. Occupation: farmer. Exceedingly penurious. Has lived very hard and meanly. He has two or three very poor cabins on his place, in one of which he lives, in another his family. The only disposition to violence manifested has been toward his wife and children. Is not filthy, but careless, has many strange delusions. Says his wife is a Negro. Skeptical on the subject of religion, appears to have had lucid intervals. Received Nov 8, 1860. Dec’d June 1862. Address W.D. Luckie, Covington, Ga.

We can only guess at the reason for his diagnosis at this point. Was he really insane? Or was it a medical condition caused by something as simple as lead poisoning that can cause delusions?? We may never know…..
