Notes for SERENIA (SIRENA) SYRENA PARK:
Please note Nancy Cooper Birge spelled Serenia Parks, also said she was from Franklin County Missouri.
1850 Census shows SERENA that she was 28 years old and born in Kentucky.
Per Stan Eddington the 1860 shows George Cooper's wife as being Judy. Therefore Serenia died before 1860.
Per June Manion also found her name as Serena Lavera Park.

30 April 2008, Jan Tappana stopped at the State Archives in Jefferson City MO., and obtained copies of Wills, Solomon Groom and his second wife Elizabeth Groom and Jesse Park. Capitalization and sentence structure is as close as possible to what is recorded. It is difficult with the faded ink to tell if there was periods, commas, etc. placed in the original.

Notes for JESSE COOPER:
Jesse is the 1st born. No dates available. Jesse Cooper fought in the Civil War. Taken prisoner - nearly starved his worst fight was over a rat he found while he was in prison. Another starving man tried to take it from him, but failed! How about raw rat for survival? He and his wife, (Sis) lived and died in Rolla Missouri area where he grew and sold vegetables. Their youngest son was named George Washington. As per Bertha Cooper Smotherman Bradford's Records
Note regarding the 1860 Census; Jesse is living in the next house from his father, not married yet, but what appears to be his sibling living with him and not his father. As his father has already married what appears to be Judy. Interesting is the children living with his father?

Notes for ELIZABETH FRANCIS ARMISTEAD:
Per Jesse Cooper Thomas
Elizabeth died before her 2nd set of twins were born. She was the youngest daughter of Thomas and Emily Armistead.
Thomas Richard was only slightly over 2 years old when their mother died Oct 31, 1884. She called her 1st son Jesse to her before she died and asked him to be a good example to his younger brothers. She asked him to promise that he would never drink intoxicants nor use tobacco and to especially watch over her baby little Richard. She hated to leave her family.
Nancy was only 16 years old when the responsibility of keeping house, cooking and washing for this big family fell upon her young shoulders. Those were the days when they cooked over a fireplaces. Or if financially able they had a good wood cook stove. You had to have the right kind of wood and one really had to know how to tend the fire to have well cooked food. Jesse was only 10 years old and George 8, the twins 6 and Bill 4 and baby Dick still in diapers. Nancy worked hard and Jesse was good help to her. George too. And John and Charley could help carry wood and such. Jesse kept his promise faithfully all of his long productive honorable live. When ever his bothers needed help even as grownups they knew their brother Jesse would help. I can remember so well when Uncle Jesse and Aunt Dora moved to the McAllister place at Flat Rock. We were so happy to have them for neighbors. My papa Richard, would have acute indigestion once in awhile. Especially when under a lot of stress. I recall one night in particular, when it seemed like he would die he was so sick. Mama ask, Richard? what do you want me to do? It took hour for a doctor to come. Papa said, "send for Jess. He came. It helped papa. Per letter I received from Bertha Cooper Bradford Sept. 23 1996. My dad bought and paid for his tomb stone. My grandma died in Franklin County, near Sullivan, but in the country. This article appeared in The Republican Tribune on Friday Aug 28 1936: "Stanton News General Crawford of near Gerald spent Saturday night with Richard Armistead."

Their son General lived the last couple of years of his life with his cousins, Jesse and Dora Cooper at Flat Rock, Missouri. He died in Dr. McDaniel's office in Summersville Missouri. Notes for NANCY J. SMITH:
Found This on Genealogy.com queries dated November 27, 2001 Posted by Laura Ransom
"I found this obituary in a newspaper clipping among old family papers. the name of the newspaper was not included. Nancy J. Crawford (nee Smith) was born near Lealie, MO., Aug 5 1859 and died at her home near Leslie, Saturday morning, May 8 1926. At the time of her departure she had reached the age of 67 years, 9 months and 3 days. In the year of 1876 she was married to General Crawford. To this union two children were born, one boy and one girl, both preceding her in death some few years ago. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, one brother Joseph W. Smith of Labaddie, MO., one half sister, Mrs. D. H. Grob of Leslie MO., many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, May 10 at one o'clock from her home. Rev. Adams conducted the funeral services at the house and also at the cemetery. Interment was in the Little Creek Cemetery. She bid no one a last farewell. She said good-bye to none. Her loving heart had ceased to beat before we knew she was gone. Her cherry smile and loving ways are pleasant to recall, she had a kind word for each one and died beloved by all."
Reply query posted December 4, 2001 by Donna Birkey "I have many relatives in Little Creek Cemetery, including John Thompson on whose land it was established. I've seen the grave of General Crawford but never quite knew how he came to be buried there. Now, I know that his wife was related to the Grob family which intermarried with the Thompsons. Thanks for posting this obit."

11. NANCY MELVINEY COOPER 4(ELI BAILEY (EAL)3, GEORGE WASHINGTON2, ?1) was born 09 December 1868 in Tibble, Franklin Co., MO, and died 26 November 1958 in Summersville, Texas Co., MO. She married WILLIAM LANKFORD BIRGE 26 September 1888 in Franklin Co., MO, son of CHARLES BIRGE and SARAH MINKS. He was born 18 October 1868 in Franklin City, Franklin Co., MO, and died 03 January 1934 in Summersville, Texas Co., MO.

>Notes for NANCY MELVINEY COOPER:
Per Jessie Cooper Thomas
Nancy Melviney Cooper Birge born Dec 9 1868. She died Nov 26 1958 at Mountain View Missouri. She is buried in the Flat Rock Cemetery, Flat Rock Missouri.
My papa, Richard Cooper, loved his only living sister very much. She had been the only mother he could remember. It was Nancy who fed him when his mother died. Who slept with him to keep him warm and so that he would not be afraid of the dark. I remember him missing her so much when they moved to Idaho. And how happy we were when they moved back to Missouri.
I do not have the date but Uncle Bill had a stroke which left him an invalid for long time. Like the good wife she had always been, she cared for him tenderly and faithfully until he died in January 3 1934. In October 1935 my mother Hattie Cooper and my sister Daphne moved onto the Russell Parks farm near Summersville Missouri where they lived until Russell sold the farm to Hugh Stoops and his son Sylvan Stoops in the fall of 1946.
Aunt Nancy lived with mamma and Daphne for some 9 or 10 months of that time. Mamma had her good Jersey cow, Buttercup, a few chickens, a sow, and 2 dogs.
Aunt Mamie Shuler had left her her beautiful white poodle "Doo Doo." They already had one dog of their own. Cousin Elmer moved them. All of papas people loved our mother and their ONLY Aunt Nancy and were very good and helpful when ever they would let anyone help. Both widows, were hard workers all of their lives. So they wanted to do everything for themselves as long as they could. I feel sure this added to their lives, too.

October 26, 1996 as told to me by Bertha Cooper Bradford I don't know how they met, but I know she told me that grandpa Eli was against her seeing him so she told me they wrote letters or notes to each other and had hid them in a hollow stump or tree. She took a few clothes & left to go with him. She was 16 when my grandmother died.

In 1932 I believe was the year that Nancy Cooper Birge put our families information down on paper. It is from this basis that I have searched. Sharlee

August 10, 1996 I went to Pasco Washington to see my Uncle Lloyd Birge, son of William and Nancy. He showed me and I read aloud Nancy Cooper Birge Bible. We also have on tape recording. It was also from here that I verified all information on the Birge, Cooper, Armistead families. Bill Birge, Lloyd's son now has this Bible. Sharlee

BIRGE FAMILY TREE

12. JESSE JOSIAH COOPER 4(ELI BAILEY (EAL)3, GEORGE WASHINGTON2, ?1) was born 24 March 1874 in Near Sullivan, Franklin Co., Mo, and died 09 November 1962 in Birch Tree, Shannon Co., Mo.
He married DORA MAGDALENE TOELKE 03 October 1900 in Union, Franklin Co., Mo. She was born 01 April 1880 in Near Sullivan, Franklin Co., Mo, and died 08 November 1964 in Near Eunice, Mo.

Notes for JESSE JOSIAH COOPER:
I have a picture of Jesse and Dora Cooper, taken March 1956 in front of the Stove they were very proud of which they had purchased Sept 27 1900.
Writing on the back of the picture; Jesse Cooper Age 82 March 24 1956. Dora M. Cooper his wife 75 April 1 1956. Age of the stove 56. married October 3 1900.

Per Jessie Cooper Thomas; Jesse Cooper's motto for his life was "If you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything, "Dora was the neighborhood nurse, giving many free hours of service to others. To be near his father Eli, Jesse rented his farm out in Franklin County MO. and bought one from Tom Ramsey, 7 miles of Thomasville in Oregon County MO. Lived there until 1911, rented it to brother John, moved back to his Franklin farm (by wagon) and until 1916 then back to Oregon County Mo farm about 7 years, bought the William Henry McAllister place at Flat Rock Community, Summerville Missouri. living there until fall of 1959 owning all three farms for a time.

Charles and Clifton were the hunters of the family. I remember Clift in often took his rifle out before school time and killed several squirrels in early morning.

OBITUARIES JESSE COOPER
Jesse Cooper, the oldest son of Eli and Elizabeth Armistead Cooper was born March 24 1874 in Franklin County near Sullivan Missouri and departed this life November 10 1962 at 9:00 P.M. Saturday in his home, following 22 days in the St. Francis Memorial Hospital, Mountain View, with a broken hip and a -torke of the throat. He had reached the age of 88 years, 7 months and 17 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Dora M. Toelke on October 3 1900 at Union Missouri. to this union were born 5 sons and 3 daughters: Charles of Salem Missouri, Earl of Eminence Missouri, Clifton of Brighton, Illinois, George of Three Rivers Michigan, Blance Hamilton of Alton Illinois, Berta Smotherman of Birch Tree Missouri and Beulah Dorman of Bartonville Illinois. Little Eli, the second son, preceded him in infancy.
To mourn his passing, he leaves his wife, 7 children, 24 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one brother William of Eminence and a host of other relatives and friends who love him. He was a farmer all of his life, living in Franklin, Oregon and Shannon counties; rearing his family by the golden rule as his guide. He professed Christ while living in Birch Tree Missouri, but had always been the peace maker. ( Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.) He will be long remembered for his goodness and kindness.
The songs, Beautiful Isle, Beyond the Sunset and Precious Memories were sung by Mrs. Beulah Cox, Mrs. Ruth Dowler and Mr. Joe Duncan. A wonderful sermon was delivered by Rev. Norman Turnbaugh.
The pallbearers were 4 grandsons: Johnny, Gary and Edward Cooper and Troy Smotherman a grandson-in-law. Gene Smotherman. Services were held in the Church of Christ at Summersville, Monday, November 12 at 1:30 P.M. and interment was in Summersville Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home.
A precious father from us has gone, a voice we loved is still; a place is vacant in our lives that can never be filled. And though the body slumbers now, the soul is safe in Heaven. These words we write of Father, dear.
As to our hearts they are given. You've done so many Christian deeds, you've been so honest, too. I'm sure no child ever had a better father than you. Dearest father, we hated to give you up, but your troubles now are all over. You have gone to be with Jesus. Across the bright heavenly shore.

Notes for JOHN HENRY COOPER:
John Cooper was such a good Tie Hacker that the buyers gave Top prices with out even inspecting Johns load of Ties. Even though John hacked thousands of Top Grad Ties, he also farmed and was a good match for Daniel Boone as a hunter. I have a picture of a live wolf he helped catch and cage. He built a log cabin that is being considered (and nothing else was said).
Aunt Nancy Birge said of John. "John is truly an honest man. Per Jessie Cooper Thomas

Notes for ISABELL (BELL) WELLS:
Per Jessie Cooper Thomas, " In the summer of 1920 on July 12, Aunt Bells brother, Willie Gilcrease, died and was buried in the Flat Rock Cemetery". She went on to say, " That was the first funeral that I can remember attending. It was July 13 1920. I was 6 years 7 months to the day. I remember it so well. Addie and I walked behind Mamma and Aunt Belle as she wept all of the way. I did not understand about death, but I felt so sorry for Aunt Belle. After they moved away from Flat rock I never saw them often. Today only Leona is still living. And so is Earthly life. Papa and my Mamma loved all of their family dearly and they wanted us to love them too. I am glad they did".

16. WILLIAM ELI (BILL) COOPER 4(ELI BAILEY (EAL)3, GEORGE WASHINGTON2, ?1) was born 10 May 1880 in Franklin Co., MO, and died 15 April 1969 in Mt. View, Howell Co., MO.
He married (1) DORA N. FOWLER 24 May 1900 in Franklin Co., MO, daughter of SYLVESTER FOWLER and MARTHA ARMISTEAD. She was born April 1883 in Franklin Co., MO, and died 1909 in Dora died 5 month after her son died.
He married (2) MYRTLE JESSE BRAKE 23 May 1912, daughter of MARION BRAKE and SARAH AGNES. She was born 23 November 1894 in MO, and died 12 February 1959.

Notes for WILLIAM ELI (BILL) COOPER:
Bill liked to play baseball. Papa Richard had a picture of Uncle Bill in a baseball suit with a Redbird on it. I hear my mother say that Bill had been in St. Louis and knew his way around the city. The 5th son and named Eli for his father. He died 9:50 PM in St. Francis Memorial Hospital Mountain View Missouri.

I Jessie Cooper Thomas can remember some things since 1918 a few memories before that time. Today is Oct 9 1992. Uncle Bill and Aunt Myrtle lived in Flat Rock neighborhood when we moved there around 1920. Elfie was very small. Mama would let me go over to their house and play with her for I always did love babies. Aunt Myrtle had a hen that would walk back and forth in front of the house, singing and singing. Aunt Myrtle would open the door. In would walk Miss Hen, jumped up into the big rocking chair settle down into the big soft pillow kept there and proceed to lay her eggs. Then she jumped down and went cackling out the door. I thought that really something.
A few years later they moved and uncle Bill worked in the timber. One day we received word that he was hurt and bad. While hauling logs up a steep hill his truck malfunctioned and started running backwards. The road was crocked and many trees beside it when the truck rammed into some trees, the logs scooted into him and came near killing him. That was a short time before my brother Bill was born for I remember mama and papa (Richard and Hattie) talking about a name for our last brother, saying lets keep a Bill in the family.
Well, he lived and was up and about but not able to do much work after that. Aunt Myrtle died of cancer. They had moved down around Eminence Missouri. Elfie took care of her for a long time. Uncle Bill lived 10 more years, Elfie also took care of him.

OBITUARIES (The Current Wave page 12, January 10 1990
Jesse Earl Cooper, son of Jesse and Dora Toelke Cooper was born July 11 1908 in Franklin county Missouri and passed away December 30 1989 at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 19 days, in Port Hueneme, California after a valiant fight against cancer.
In 1932, Earl and Stella Ferguson were joined in Holy Matrimony and just 10 months later, Earl's young wife was taken from him leaving him with a baby girl, Doris Mac, just one week old. At first, Earl thought he couldn't go on with his life, but eventually, love came into his life again and he and Marie Sobinske exchanged their marriage vows. They were given 25 years of happiness. Their home was blessed with two wonderful children, Robert Earl and Ann Marie. when Robert was in college and Ann had entered nurses training, Earl again lost his loving wife. This was in 1959. In 1963, God again blessed Earl's life with a loving helpmate, Mable Ennis Phillips. Earl and Mable made their home in California during the winter months, were Mable taught school and Earl followed the carpenter trade and enjoyed his hobby of gardening. Earl and Mable also loved traveling. when they were first married, they made a trip into the mountains where it was snowing. They were in their pick-up truck, so Earl loaded the back with snow and took it back to Port Hueneme for their neighbor children to see, many of the children had never seen snow and how Earl and Mabel enjoyed seeing those little ones playing in the snow! this was the kind of man Earl Cooper was. He was a strong man with lots of love for all things great and small. When Gerald Meade was a little fellow, Earl helped Gerald's dad sink a well shaft for water. After that Gerald always said Earl Cooper was the strongest man in the world. Well, to his children and grandchildren, Daddy and Grandpa Eal has been about the strongest man in the world. Going back over Daddy's life, we see a lot of heartaches he's had along the way, but--we also remember an awful lot of happiness--when the family got together for home made ice cream or a feast of watermelon, cooled in the spring branch--Daddy didn't care much for fancy things, but he loved and was most happy with just the simple things of life. He lived a good clean life and we never heard our Daddy ever use God's name in vain, he never smoked a cigarette and we never ever saw our Daddy drunk. And he tried his best to instill in his children all the things he believed was right. But the most wonderful thing in this world this past summer, thanks to the prayers of his family and friends, Daddy gave his heart to God. He has always been a good man, but how wonderful to know he now rest in the arms of God.
He was preceded in death by his loving wives, Stella and Marie, his parents Jesse and Dora, two brothers, Eli and Charlie and one son-in-law, Dale Martin. He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Mable of Port Hueneme California; his son, Robert of Marionville, Missouri; his two daughters, Doris Martin of Eminence, and Ann Dix of Springfield Missouri; his step-daughter pat Dawson of Dana Point, California; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Cooper; one son-in-law Roy Dix; one step-son-in-law bill Dawson; 11 grandchildren, Bill Dawson Jr., Diane martin and Luann Dawson Hayden, Donna martin, Lynda, Robbie, Karyn and Kevin Cooper, Robert, Jonathan and Jennifer Dix; two great grandson, Jay Martin and Dusty Ard; two brothers, Clifton of Summersville and George of Michigan; three sister, Blanche Hamilton of Alton Illinois, Bertha Bradford of Birch Tree and Beulah Dorman of Eminence; six brother-in-law and five sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. We are unhappy about losing our Daddy but we know he is in God's keeping and someday we will have a family reunion, where there will be no more cancer, heart trouble or any other sorrow, but all will be peace, joy and Happiness with our Lord.

CARD OF THANKS
We would like to take this means to thank sincerely all of those who have been so kind to us during the sickness and death of our father, J. Earl Cooper. We would like to say a special thank you to Mother Mabel and the family in California who were so generous with their love and devotion during Daddy's last illness. Thank you, for loving our Daddy! also than you to Aunt ___.

A lot of the information I have placed in Earl's family file came from the "History of Shannon County Missouri," published 1986, which I was sent a copy of. Copy in my files, Sharlee.

64. JESSIE MAY COOPER 5(THOMAS RICHARD4, ELI BAILEY (EAL)3, GEORGE WASHINGTON2, ?1) was born 13 December 1913 in near Greenland in Washington CO., Ark, and died 16 May 1997 in Pasco, Franklin Co., WA. She married HENRY LUKE THOMAS 02 August 1936, son of HENRY W. THOMAS and ANNA. He was born 29 April 1912 in Niangua, Webster Co., MO., and died 18 September 1975 in Niangua, Webster Co MO.

Notes for JESSIE MAY COOPER:
Born on a Saturday Dec 13 1913 wt 10 lbs. She had a vail over her face. Thought by the midwives to be a good omen. Mamma often mentioned it to me, (Jessie Cooper Thomas).
Jessie got in a hurry, she would say, poor Richard! he always worked around outside or waited in another room while I was in labor, but when Jessie was born he didn't have time to get Mrs. Laney, our neighbor in Ark. Richard cut and tied your navel cord, Jessie. Some how he was afraid he may not have done as good a job as an experienced midwife so sort of watched over me more closely when I was a small child. I only know that I was afraid to disobey him, I always wanted to please him and Mamma, and that I loved and respected them much! In 1935, in February it was when papa took that pneumonia, 5 of we girls were in St. Louis area. Nellie and John Staggenborg lived in Ferguson, Nora and Jim Allman in Layton, while Daisy, Mindy and I all were working in wealthy Family's homes. I was at E. H. Curlee-McCarthy home on south Sappington road, Kirkwood Missouri. I was the cook, Susie Jackson, a nice black girl, the maid, John Hudspath, a black man, Mr. John Curlee's chauffeur, while his brother was the yardman. I cannot think of his name but the two had nice quarters over the stables, long out of use when I was there. They had a nice small building on the grounds that they using for an Art Guild. Several of Mrs. Nell McCarthey's friends came once a week to have an art class taught by an artist friend. Susie who went home most nights came in the 19th early in the morning as usual she road in a taxi driven by a black man names Jessie Cooper. Susie told me that Mr. Cooper had received a telegram which read, "come home papa gravely sick" and it was from Summersville Missouri. So he was troubled about it because it had to be for someone else since he did not know anyone at Summersville. Of Course I immediately ask permission to leave for home. I called the other girls and we decided the only way that we could go was to pool our monies and go in Jim Allmans truck. It took several hours for us to all get leave from jobs and meet and get started on the big flatbed truck. Vernon and Victor Shuler went with us. It was some 200 miles, a long tiring, anxious trip for us all. Papa tried to wait for us. They had no phone. They did not know that the telegram had gone astray. The neighbors came to help. They always came when anyone was sick to take turns sitting up at night with their neighbors. But as the night air grew heavy papa could not breath any longer. He went to meet Jesus 2 hours before we arrived. Mamma told us that he thought we were there just before he died he told his neighbors, "we have good girls, Hattie and me". He also asked his neighbors to forgive him if there was anything that any of them had done again him for he wanted to die with a clean slate. He knew he was dying. When papa gave his life to Jesus he went to work for him. Papa was a doer, faithful unto death praise god! All of this is from Jessie Cooper Thomas, some told to her by her mother Hattie.

I, Jessie (Cooper) Thomas collected these records in 1964 to add to the other Cooper Family s in hopes of keeping in contact with my Papa and Mamma's Beloved family. My mother often said, "My own mother gave me away when I was only 3 weeks old, but God gave me a wonderful family. And she taught us that kind of love. Jessie Cooper Thomas

The only thing wrong with Jessie Cooper Thomas story, is that Summersville, Texas Co., MO is more than 200 hundred miles away. She must have meant Stanton, Franklin Co., MO, as that is where he died, Sharlee

Jessie and her husband lived in Niangua Missouri, where he is buried, and then she moved to Pasco Washington to live with a daughter I believe, until she died. This is where, I Sharlee spoke with her the very first time and she gave me copies of her work. I was in Pasco at my great uncle Lloyd Birge's home and he left for a short time and came back with Jessie. Her hair was in rollers and was at first very still, while all the time trying to figure out who I looked like and who's daughter I was. Then uncle Lloyd Birge again, explained who I was.

Jessie would never ever give me the names of her children’s spouses or birth dates. I have been able to find some things on her sibling’s spouses and their families thru the census and other sources.

Henry’s father, mother, and other sibling’s; Monroe, Mattie, Ava and Herman, can be found on the April 19, 1910 census in Niangua Twp Webster Co MO. (Sharlee)
