One Name Study Q&A
One Name Study Links:
What is a One Name Study? A ONS is the research of a single surname (taking into consideration and including variations in spelling). The research includes the history, geography, and etymology of the single surname. In essence, an ONS collects every occurrence of the chosen surname, worldwide. This differs from typical genealogy in that the research is not limited to tracing a linear descendancy or ancestry. Personally, I have chosen to begin this study in an attempt to connect the MCKEMIE lines between Ireland and Scotland. I've come to understand that many genealogists "fall" into ONSs with similar goals. They've reached a brick wall and in an attempt to conquer it, they have elected to collect every occurrence of the name, in every place and time, in the hopes that eventually a trend or clue might emerge for their own research. For more indepth information, click on the "Guild" link at the bottom of the page.
The Goal of the Study To discover the oldest source or origin of the name. Eventually, we would like to connect as many of the McKs as possible. And in the process, we will compile a helpful database of MCK information worldwide.

  • How is the ONS organized? The core information is organized in the Records Section. Here you will find the assorted wills, biographies, census entries, etc, to assist in your research. Each record source is also entered into an MS Access file, in addition to being displayed here. (Note the digit number/letter combination that is indicated with many of the records. This is its "Source ID") And lastly, I maintain a "ONS Database" of individuals that is steadily growing. This is the "lineage" part of the study and I utilize both Family Treemaker and The Master Genealogist to maintain this database.
How can I help? You can submit records you have found. You can recommend a new source for ONS extraction of names. You can extract records locally for inclusion in the study. Participation in the study will not only grow this database, but also reduce the amount of repetitive work. Make that long eight-hour day at the archives pay-off; submit your findings here! I will publish your information, with credit to you and your contact information. Need more ideas? No problem, just let me know and I can make suggestion or two.

Check HERE to see the different projects that are either in progress or which are in the process of getting started. You can either "adopt" these projects or simply contribute to them. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
    Additions and Updates
Check the"WHAT'S NEW" page to see what's been added to the site and what's been updated or revised. Also, join the McKamey E-mail list as this is where notices of changes/additions are posted.
Also, for a rather casual random update of genealogy projects I'm working on, visit my Blog.
What will I get out of the Study? Access to records already compiled and presented here. Connections to "relations" who may know something to help enricha nd expand your own research, or even break through a long-standing brickwall. Recognition as a member of the ONS and as a contributor to the knowledge of others.

Can I search for a particular name? Absolutely! However, keep in mind that ours is a name that is so variously spelled as to be mind-boggling. It might behoove you to search for a first or given name, or even a spouse's name, rather than simply "McKemie." Follow this LINK.

McKemie One Name Study DNA Project
This project evolved out of the McK/McC One Name Study and is an attempt to better understand our McK/McC kinship, family lines, ethnic origins, migrations, and Scottish clan affiliations. In essence, this DNA project endeavors to answer two questions every genealogist has: Who are we and where did we come from? For information on how you can participate, go to the DNA Page.
    McKemie Pioneers
McKemie Pioneers (Kirby Press, 1997, 75 pp.) is a fascinating narrative history of three centuries of McKemies, from the Scottish origins of the clan to the present day. With fold-out chart of the first five known generations of McKemie descendants, from 1620. For more information or to order a copy, please contact
