CLUES AND THINGS TO CONSIDER ABOUT JOHN HERRING AND HIS ORIGINS!!!

The following questions and comments may provide leads to John's origins when they are answered or considered.

Note: John Herring was can be found in Oglethorpe County, GA from its birth as a county in Georgia. Oglethorpe was the fifth county created in GA and was formed from a part of Wilkes County in 1793. At that time it included all the territory north of the Ogeeche River, which was acquired by a treaty signed with the Indians in Augusta. Greene contributed a portion to Oglethorpe in 1794, and then again in 1799 parts of Oglethorpe were added to Greene and in exchange parts of Greene were added to Oglethorpe. In 1811 a part of Oglethorpe became part of Madison. In 1813 a portion was taken from Clarke, in 1825 a part was set off to Taliaferro, and in 1831 another part was added to Madison. Prior to being in Oglethorpe County, John Herring was found in Wilkes County, GA.

2.   David Herring, John's son, listed his birthplace as SC on the 1850/1860 censuses, which may indicate John came to GA from SC.

3.   Who was Elizabeth Gosden and what was her relationship with John Herring, if any? John Herring became signatory to her bond as follows: Oglethorpe County Inferior Court Records, Nov term 1815:Know all men by these presents that Elizabeth Gosden and John Herring are held and firmly bound ... in the sum of $1500, ... the 6th November 1815. The condition of the above obligation ... if the above bound Elizabeth Gosden, administratrix ... of John Gosden, decd., ... Elizabeth Gosden her X mark. John Herring, signature. Recorded November 9th 1815, page 61.

5.   From a book entitled "Georgia Genealogical Gleanings", found at the Knoxville Tennessee Historical Library, it states that Wilkins S. Ivey was born in Greene Co., GA in 1812 and came to Walton Co., GA when he was 8 years old. He was Judge of the Superior Court for 5 years and Sheriff for 36 years. His father was Jeremiah Ivey, born in VA and came to GA in 1800. Wilkins was married to Jane Herring, daughter of David Herring, believed to be the son of John Herring, and it states David was also of VA.

Revolutionary Claims Filed in South Carolina between August 20, 1783 and August 31, 1786, kept by James McCall, Auditor General, and copied by Janiell Revill, published Columbia, SC 1941. These are actually stub indents, which were actually IOU's, from the state of SC, that were either paid to the individuals themselves, or, since they were negotiable, assigned to others.
