[57] WAYNE B. LEMMON PASSES IN SAMOA, LINDEN COMMITTAL (1959)
--
Wayne Beardsley Lemmon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lemmon of Linden, died
Sunday in the Samoa Islands while on a missions assignment for the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. from the L.D.S. Stake House
on Brookside Road in Stockton, with arrangements being handled by B.C. Wallace
and Son Funeral Chapel. Bishop Burke O. Clegg of the First Ward, L.D.S. and
the Rev. Richard Walsh of the First Methodist Church of Redding, a former
Linden pastor, conducting the services. Interment will be in the Linden
Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steve Campora, Larry Billigmeier, James Lawley, Robert
Sharp, Richard Miller, and Joe DiCarlo.
Young Lemmon, 22 years of age, was born May 23, 1937 in Sacremento. With his
family he moved to Linden in 1942. He attended Linden Grammar School and
Linden High School; graduating from the local high school in 1955. He
continued his education at Brigam Young University at Provo, Utah, and after
two years of college in 1957 he reported to the LDS Church that he was
available for mission work anywhere in the world. In the fall of 1957 he was
sent on a two and one half year full time and self supporting mission to the
Samoa Islands. He died in Samoa, the victim of blood poisoning. He first was
treated for what appeared to be a boil and he was hospitalized for two weeks
before his death.
In April 1960 he was due to return to this country, and he had planned to
resume his education at BYU in Utah. He would have completed his education,
entered a business or profession, settled down, and then continued his active
participation in the affairs of the church in whatever capacity he would be
needed.
At BYU he was active in several school clubs. While attending Linden High
School he was a soloist in the school band playing the baritone horn.
Together with his Dad and family, he joined the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter Day Saints as converts in 1951. Boys are ordained to the priesthood at
12 years of age if the are worthy and members of the church. Young Lemmon
became a member of the church when he was 13 years of age, and shortly
thereafter he became a Deacon at the Stockton First Ward on July 8, 1951. By
the time he was 20 he became an elder of the church, at which time he
presented himself for a mission. In all of his work for the church he had the
full support and approval of his parents.
Young Lemmon was an ardent swimmer and his family would prefer memorial
gifts for the Linden Community Swimming Pool in lieu of floral offerings.
Memorials may be left or mailed to the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Linden.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by Kenneth Lemmon of Linden, his
brother; Jenny and Otto Hartz of Denver, Colorado, grandparents; and the
following aunts and uncles: Luella Fish of Shorthills, New Jersey; Donald W.
Conklin of Colusa, California; Marguerite Stevens of Tacoma, Washington;
Vivian M. Lemmon of Tanabe, Japan and Sherman B. Lemmon.
[Copies of letters from the LDS Missionaries in Samoa and the Medical Report
of Wayne's condition and death are in the possession of the author, his first
cousin.]
