died on May 1, 1941 and is buried at the Uehling Cemetery in an

Uehling Man Dies Services are Held There Monday
Rev. Hugo Welchert officiated at funeral services at Uehling St.
Paul's Lutheran church Monday afternoon for Henry Beckmann, who
died Saturday at a Fremont Hospital.
Henry John Christy Beckmann was born Dec. 14, 1866 in the village
of Moneas, Germany. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith.
After the father and two children died Mr. Beckmann and his mother
left Germany for America, coming directly to Hooper in the fall of
1885. They resided there two years then moved to the farm east of
Uehling, which continued to be Mr. Beckmann's home until his death.
His mother died Nov. 11, 1915. Since then Mr. Beckmann lived
alone. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, at one time
serving as treasurer.
The Last month his health failed, becoming serious two weeks ago,
when he was taken to the Dodge county hospital. He died June 17, at
the age of 77 years. six months and three days.

Mrs. Sophia Beckmann, mother of Heinrick Beckmann, died at her
home, a mile east of Uehling, last Thursday. She was born in
Mechlenburg, Germany, November 15, 1840, and therefore lacked four
days of being seventy-five years old. She came from the old country
about twenty years ago. With her son, she has lived a serene life
on her farm home, Keeping house for him. Funeral services were
held on Saturday, conducted by Rev. A. Ollenberg, pastor of the

Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at Hooper Care Center in Hooper.
The memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, at the Uehling
Auditorium in Uehling. Memorial visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Sunday,
June 9, with family receiving friends, at the Uehling Auditorium.

Obituary for LeRoy "Lee" Eastberg
LeRoy Edgar Eastberg, best known as "Lee", was born August 28,
1925, in Aurora, Nebraska, to Edgar and Grace (Nelson) Eastberg. He
passed away Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Hooper Care Center in
Hooper, Nebraska.
LeRoy and his family moved to Uehling when he was four years old.
He was raised in Uehling, graduating from Uehling High School in
1942.
He married Fern Johnson in August 1943 and they had three
children. Lee served his country from 1943 to 1946, in WWII,
earning a purple heart. He married Glenice Meyer in November 1975
and brought three more children into the family. He was an awesome
husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Lee drove truck for House Transfer, Larson Transfer, Uehling Coop;
he delivered fire trucks for Smeal?s in his later years. He also
worked, as a mechanic, for Hormel, Uehling Implement and many more
companies. He then established Lee?s Conoco, Lee's Welding, and for
the past 30 plus years, the New to You Shoppe with his wife in
Uehling. He was the Village of Uehling Utility Superintendent for
several years. He played an active role in founding the Uehling
Rescue Squad, he was top in his EMT class, and many people were
comforted by Lee?s presence.
He is survived by his wife, Glenice; sons: Jim (Barb) Eastberg of
Fremont, NE, Jeff (Deb) Wegner of Howells, NE, Rodney (Kammie)
Wegner of St. Johns, FL; daughters: Beverly (Ron) Duncan of
Scribner, NE, Melinda (Brent) Edwards of Kennewick, WA, Andrea
(Tim) Ristau of Scribner; sister, Norma (Ralph) Black of Neligh,

Vernie (Von Essen) Jensen

Vernie Marie (Von Essen) Jensen was born Dec. 1, 1927, in Oakland to
Elmer John and Marie Katherine Barbara (Uehling) Von Essen. She
passed away at 91 years of age on Feb. 6, 2019, at the Hooper Care
Center, in Hooper.
Vernie grew up on her parents' farm southwest of Oakland and
attended country school at District 40 through eighth grade. She
graduated from Oakland High School in 1944. She served as Honored
Queen of Job's Daughters in Oakland. Vernie attended Midland
Lutheran
College, Fremont, for a year before teaching country school at
District 84 south of Uehling for two years. She prided herself on
having the top eighth-grade student in Dodge County during that
tenure. Vernie thereafter graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree
cum laude from Midland Lutheran College in 1950.
Vernie and Wallace Erick Jensen, of North Platte, were married on
Aug. 19, 1951, at rural St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Hooper. They
became specially acquainted while on geology trips to the Southwest
at Midland. They continued their education, and taught school in
Ravenna and Greeley, Colorado, for several years before returning to
Uehling. They operated Motel 77 in Uehling. Vernie taught home
economics at Uehling High for a year, and thereafter, taught art at
Oakland-Craig Jr.-Sr. High until retiring in 1989. Vernie belonged
to
the Golden Hour Club, WoHeLo Club, St. Paul's Lutheran Church Women,
and Oakland-Lyons Art Club. She served as Worthy Matron of the
Oakland Order of Eastern Star. She attended night and summer school
at Midland Lutheran College, Dana College, Blair, and the University
of Nebraska, Lincoln, and received a Master of Art Education degree
from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1977. After
retirement,
Vernie served on the Village of Uehling's 100-year celebration
committee in 2006 and was a co-author of the book published for the
event. Vernie resided the last 10 years of her life at the Hooper
Care Center, where she considered the staff and residents her best
friends.
Vernie enjoyed humor, travel, genealogy, geology, reading, sewing,
dachshunds, Hershey's Almond Bars, sidewalk sales, and art. Her
travels included nearly every state, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and the
Caribbean. She visited local art museums on every trip. She often
traveled with Moustache Joe Tours, Fremont, and attended numerous
Elderhostels. Vernie traveled to Washington, D.C., with the Burt
County Bicentennial Choir in 1976. She was a member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church, Uehling, for her entire life, and taught Sunday and
Bible Schools. Vernie often gave talks at showers and other social
events, featuring the works of Mark Twain and Irma Bombeck. She
enjoyed visiting with her students, and encouraged them to pursue
higher education, talents and dreams. Her students called her
"Vern."
She had a knack for finding that delicate balance between being a
teacher/parent and a friend. She knew when a student needed someone
to listen. Students would often come up to her to tell a story and
pump her for a funny comment. She enjoyed being around people. She
saw colors, birds, flowers, wildlife, rock formations,
constellations, and sunsets that most rarely notice. She always
carried a camera.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Norma Auralea;
brothers-in-law, James Frances Frahm and Elden Duane Wesely.
Survivors are sister, Constance Ann Wesely, Fremont; son and
daughter-in-law, John Eric (Jack) and Mary Valentine (Burson)
Jensen,
Lincoln sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Esther Helen (Jensen) and
Vigo Deverne Christensen, Bennington; grandchildren, Ethan John
Jensen, Hannah Marie Jensen, and Gayla Ann Berry, Lenexa, Kansas,
and
Adam Lee (spouse Rebecca Ann Wilson) Berry of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico;

Waeldin Berry. Vernie also enjoyed many cousins, nieces, nephews,

friends, and their families.
A celebration of life will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, at St.
Paul's Lutheran Church in Uehling. Burial will be in Uehling

Last Rites Are Held for Miss A. Kindschuh
Miss Antonia Kindschuh, 76, passed away Friday morning at the West
Point Hospital. She had been in failing health for the past year.
The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, at 1:45 from
the Wollmer & Warne Funeral Home, and at 2 o'clock from Zion
Lutheran Church. Rev. R. W. Schricker conducted the services.
Interment was in the Uehling Cemetery.
Music for the service was by the mixed quartet, Miss Glenice
Schafersman, Mrs. Clarence Hartmann, Clarence Wagner and Orren Von
Seggern. Miss Janice Thernes was the organist. Pallbearers were
Kermit Meyer, Fred Koehler, Harold Heller, John Urban, Richard Hall
and David Kindschuh.
Antonia Augusta Kindschuh, daughter of John And Dorothea Kindschuh,
was born in Gumpelstadt, Saxmeinunger, Germany, May 25, 1881. She
migrated to America with her family in 1886.
The family settled in Burt County near Oakland where Miss Kindschuh
spent her girlhood. She was baptized in Germany and confirmed by
the late Rev. J. P. Kuehnert, at the St. John's Lutheran Church
near Lyons. She attended Zion Church and was a member of the Zion
Church Women and the Logan Ladies Aid.
She cared for her aged parents a number years, and was also in
Denver for a time. She lived much of her life with relatives at
Oakland and Hooper.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Henry, and three sisters,
Christiana (Mrs. Herman Koehler), Eliza (Mrs. George Kriebel), and
Anna (Mrs. John Ehlman)
She is survived by one brother, Emil Kindschuh of Axtell, and two
sisters, Mrs. Mary Heller of Tilden, and Frieda, (Mrs. B. J. Meyer)
of Oakland; also twenty one nieces and nephews, one grandniece, and
a host of friends who mourn her passing.
The Logan Ladies Aid served dinner to the family before the

Funeral services were held for Miss Antonia Kindschuh Monday at the
Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper. Miss Kindschuh died at the West
Point Hospital Friday following an illness of about one year. She
was 76 years of age..
Miss Kindschuh, the daughter of John and Dorothea Kindschuh, was

Emil A. Kindschuh, 96, of Axtell, formerly of Uehling. Funeral
services were held Sunday in Axtell. He died Thursday in a
Holderge hospital.
Born in Germany, he came to the Hooper-Uehling area at the age of
two. He farmed there until moving to Axtell in 1948.

Mrs. Kindschuh Rites at Elim
Funeral services for Ebba Theresa Kindschuh of Holdgege were held
at the Trinity Lutheran church and the Elim Lutheran church last
Tuesday. Interment was in the Uehling cemetery. She died the
preceding Friday at the Phelps Memorial Health Care Center where
she had been hospitalised for less than a day at the age of 81
years.
Ebba Kindschuh was born at Magnet Feb. 13, 1901, the daughter of
Carl Gottfred and Elise Fredstrom. Shortly there after the family
moved to a farm near Oakland which became the permanent family
home.
She was baptized into the Christian faith in the Swedish
congregation of Tabor Lulthern Church, Wausa. Later in childhood
she took her confirmation studies in Swedish and was confirmed at
the First Lutheran Church of Oakland.
In addition to attendance at the local district elementary school
for a short period of time she studied piano at the music
conservatory of Luther College at Wahoo.
On Feb. 20, 1926, she was married to Emil Kindschuh, aslo from the
Oaklnad area. Four children were born to the couple. The family
lived in the Swaburg-Uehlig community until 1948 when Emil and Ebba
discontinued farming and moved to Axtell were both for a time were
employed at the Bethphage Mission. Since Emil's death in 1980, she
has been living at Christian Homes in Holdrege.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister, and
one brother.
She is survived by four children; Pastor Johh L. Kindschuh of Rock
Island, Ill., Dr. Eugene Kindschuh of Mercer Island, Wash., Dorothy
(Mrs. Gary Berggren) and David Kindschuh, both of Axtell, 12
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five brothers; Martin
Fredstrom of Turlock, CA, Arvid, Rudy and Bert Fredstrom of Lincoln

John Henry Kindschuh of Fremont passed away Tuesday in an Omaha
hospital where he had been a patient for a week. Funeral services

take place in the Uehling cemetery.
Mr. Kindschuh, who was born in Germany January 22, 1874 is survived

John Kindschuh
After an illness of about a month, John Kindschuh died at his home,
six miles south of town, Monday evening, June 28, of pneumonia, at
the age of 75 years and 3 days.
He was born at Gumpelstadt, Saxe-Meinungen, Germany, June 25, 1842.
On November 24, 1868, he was married to Dorothea Elizabeth
Schnittler, and to this union eight children were born, seven of
them in Germany. The children are; Eliza Kriebel, Hooper;
Christiana Koehler, Craig; Henry Kindschuh, Miles City, Mont.;
Maria Heller, Tilden, Nebr.; Anna Ehlman, St. Charles Mo.; Antonia
and Emil, at home; Mrs. B. J. Meyer, Oakland.
These children and their mother are mourning a devoted husband and
a loving father, one who professed a living belief in Christ and
tried to live according to His precepts. The widow has been an
invalid for eight or ten years, bedridden most of the time for the
past two years. He leaves also sixteen grandchildren and one great-
grandchild.
The family came to America in 1886, arriving at Hooper October 14.
The first winter they lived in the Swaburg neighborhood, and then
moved to the farm that has been the home ever since. Six years ago
the father turned the farming operations over to his son, Emil, but
continued to live on the farm.
Funeral was from the home Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock. Rev.
Julius Freese of Hooper was the officiating clergyman. Pallbearers
were: John Bengston, Gust Engdahl, Frank Daubert, O. F. Uehling,
Wm. Peters. Burial was in the Uehling cemetery. - Oakland

Mrs. John Kindschuh
Six weeks and a day from the death of her husband, Mrs. Kindschuh
followed him to the Great Beyond. As if she had nothing further to
live for, she drooped gradually since then, and literally wasted
away. Her death occurred at the farm home, six miles south of
Oakland, August 10.
Mrs. Kindschuh had been an invalid for fifteen years, bedridden for
the last two and a half years. Her ailment was bronchitis. There
never was, say her own, a more patient, uncomplaining sufferer than
she. Whatever she had to bear, she did not wish to burden others
with any recital or evidence of it. And so she sank peacefully to
rest, sustained to the end by her faith in her Savior, a loving
wife and a devoted mother.
Dorothea Elizabeth Schnittler was born December 28, 1846, at
Gumpelstadt, Saxe-Meinungen, Germany. She was married November 24,
1868, to John Kindschuh. Eight children, all surviving her, were
born to this union. They are: Mrs. George Kriebel of Hooper, Mrs.
Herman Koehler of Craig, Henry Kindschuh of Miles City, Mont.; Mrs.
Henry Heller of Tilden, Nebr.; Mrs. John Eklman of St. Charles,
Mo.; Emil and Antonia, at home; Mrs. B. J. Meyer of Oakland. There
are also sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mr. and Mrs. Kindschuh and family immigrated to America in 1886,
arriving at Hooper, Nebr., on October 14 of that year. The first
winter they lived in the Swaburg neighborhood and then in the
spring moved to the farm that has been the home ever since. Mr.
Kindschuh grew old and six years ago turned the working of the farm
over to his son, Emil, but the old folks continued to live on the
farm.
Funeral will be held from the home at 2 o'clock today. The same
pall bearers that served at the husband's funeral will carry her to
her last resting place, and the same minister, the Rev. Julius

Uehling - Funeral services for Calvin D. Mallette, 26, of Uehling,
will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Uehling.
He died Wednesday at Denver General Hospital in Denver of injuries
from a construction accident. He was a construction worker.
Mr. Mallette was born July 17, 1961 in Fremont. He lived in
Uehling until three months ago when he moved to Denver. He
attended Uehling schools and graduated from Logan View Junior-
Senior High School in 1979. He worked for Anderson Excavation
Company in Omaha, which has a construction side in Denver.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church here.
Survivors include his parents, Jerry and Shirley Mallette of
Uehling; one brother, Kent of Uehling; one sister, Diane Nelson of
Oklahoma City, Okla.; and a grandmother, Helen Hilbers of Uehling.
The Revs. Tim Madsen and Wendy Buckley will officiate the Saturday
morning service. Burial will be in Uehling Cemetery. Visitation

Jerry Mallette
Jerry Mallette, 64, of Uehling died Saturday, August 29 at his
residence in Uehling.
Jerry was born December 22, 1933, in Craig to Omer and Geraldine
(Odlund) Mallette. He attended school at Kennard and Alder Grove
in his youth and graduated from Uehling High School in 1952.
On April 25, 1954, he married Shirley Hilbers at St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Hooper. They have lived in the Uehling area
from 1963 to the present time.
Jerry served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958. When he returned
home from the service, he was a farmer in the rural Hooper area
from 1958 until 1968.
Then he purchased the Uehling Grange and was the owner/operator
from 1968 until 1974. After that, he began auctineering for the
Fremont Livestock Barn from 1974 to 1980. At this time, he worked
with several different auction companies, Del Petersen & Assoc.,
Albin Auctioneers, Quad State Auctions and Von Seggern Auctioneers,
until his retirement in 1989.
Jerry was a past member of the Uehling Fire Department, he coached
most of the youth baseball leagues in Uehling for quite a while, he
was a 4-H leader, and was a member of the Hooper Saddle Club.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Uehling, a son, Kent
Mallette of Uehling; a daughter, Diane Nelson of Hooper; one
granddaughter, Katie Jones of Hooper, three brothers, Jack of
Parker, CO., Tim of Hooper, and Tom of Oakland; and two sisters,
Mary Wistrom of Omaha and Jane Leeper of Winslow.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Calvin, and two
brothers, Paul and James Mallette.
Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 10 a.m.
at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Uehling, Rev. Wallace Barth will

The memorial service for Shirley M. Mallette, 72, of Uehling will be
10 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church in Uehling.
She died Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at her home after a long battle
with cancer.
She was born May 30, 1935, on a farm south of Hooper to Harvey and
Helen (Tiedemann) Hilbers. She was a 1952 graduate of Uehling High
School and attended Commercial Extension School of Commerce in
Omaha. She lived in the Uehling and Hooper area most of her life.
She married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Mallette, on April 25,
1954, in Hooper. While her husband was in the service, she lived in
Anniston, Ala., from 1955-57. She worked a variety of jobs
throughout her lifetime, including banking, real estate, auctions,
was director of housing and was a secretary. She was the village
clerk of Uehling for 22 years, retiring in June 2007. Her husband
preceded her in death Aug. 28, 1998.
She was on the Planning Commission, Business Club member and was
active in the community. She enjoyed playing softball and bowling
and was an avid card player, including tournament cribbage,
duplicate bridge and pinochle. She received numerous awards,
including her silver life master in duplicate bridge.
Survivors include: a son, Kent Mallette of Broken Bow; a daughter,
Diane Nelson (and special friend, Frank Jones) of Hooper; three
brothers, Marv (and wife, Kay) Hilbers of Uehling, Norm (and wife,
Virginia) Hilbers of Ralston and Duane Hilbers of Omaha; a
granddaughter, Katie Jones; and two great-grandchildren, Draven and
Damien.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Calvin; and
twin sisters, Jean and Junice.
The Rev. Nora Mendyk will officiate Saturday?s service. There is no
visitation. Burial will be in Uehling Cemetery.

Melvin D. "Mel" Meyer, 72, of Uehling died Friday, Dec. 16, 2011, at
Arbor Manor in Fremont, where he had resided for the past year. He
was born Nov. 2, 1939, to Ted and Alice (Schulzkamp) Meyer on the
farm homestead four miles northwest of Uehling. He lived his
lifetime near and in Uehling. He received his education at country
school District 40. He attended Oakland High School and in his
senior year transferred to Uehling, graduating from Uehling High
School. He worked at the Walt Weitzenkamp farm after graduation and
then farmed the home place for several years. He purchased the
SuperSweet business in Uehling and became the maintenance man for
the Village of Uehling.
He married Judy Johnson on July 27, 1968. They made their home in or
near Uehling. He served 30-plus years on the Uehling Volunteer Fire
Department, on the rural board for the fire department and as fire
chief for 5-plus years. Survivors include: his wife, Judy of
Uehling; sons, Robert "Bobby" and Danny Meyer of Oakland; daughter,
Tammy (Jason) Muessel of Prague; sisters, Glenice (LeRoy) Eastberg
of Uehling and Debbie (Charlie) Krutilek of Decatur; and three
grandchildren.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church
in Uehling with Vicar Jeff Schmitz officiating. Visitation will be
from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland with the
family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. and a prayer at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Wednesday at
the church. Burial will be in Uehling Cemetery.

Uehling - Ted A. Meyer, 73, a retired farmer from Uehling died
Saturday morning at the Memorial Hospital of Dodge County after
emergency surgery.
He was born February 20, 1906 in Scribner and lived his life in the
Oakland and Uehling area.
Mr. Meyer was engaged in farming near Uehling until 1968 when he
retired and moved to Uehling. He was a member of St. Paul's
Lutheran Church in Uehling, the Eagles Club in West Point and was a
past member of Dist. 40 school board.
He married Alice Schulzkump on Jan. 11, 1939 at West Point. She
survives.
Other survivors include; a son, Melvin of Uehling; two daughters,
Mrs. LeRoy (Glenice) Eastberg of Uehling and Mrs. Charles (Debbie)
Krutilek of Oakland; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Gustaf of
Oakland; Edward and Diedrich of Scribner and Walter of West Point;
two sisters, Mrs. Arland (Erna) Schulzkump of Greeley, Colo. and
Mrs. Louis (Elsa) Kriz of Oceanside, Calif.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday in the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church in Uehling with the Rev. John Pierson and the Rev. Hiram
Lilley officiating. Burial will be in the Uehling Cemetery.
Visitation is in progress until 9 p.m. tonight at the Warne Funeral

Alice Louise Meyer, 80, of Uehling, died Monday, June 29, 1998, at
Oakland Heights in Oakland.
She was born to Fred and Anna (Koci) Schulzkump Aug. 22, 1917, at
their home in rural West Point. She lived her entire childhood on
the farm she was born, She attended rural school near her home.
During her teen years she worked for area neighbors helping with
household chores and child care.
Alice was married to Ted Meyer Jan. 11, 1939, at her parents's
home. The couple lived and farmed near Uehling until moving into
Uehling in 1969. They owned and operated the Hilltop Cafe and
Service Station during the mid 70's before retiring and selling the
business.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church/United Church
of Christ in Uehling and was a active member of the Women's
Fellowship of the church and the Uehling Fireman's Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Mel of Uehling; two daughters, Glenice
(LeRoy) Eastberg of Uehling and Debbie (Charles) Krutilek of
Oakland; a sister, Verona Vogel of Battle Creek; eight
grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren;
two step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ted in March 1984
and brother, Ray Schulzkump.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 2, at First
Congregational Church/United Church of Christ in Uehling. Rev.
Wallace B. Barth officiated. Organist was Leta Olson and Katie
Lowe was vocalist. Burial was in the Uehling Cemetery.

He was born May 5. 1926, in Crofton and graduated from Uehling High
School in 1944. He was a longtime resident of the Hooper/Uehling
area and was a tree mover and horticulturist.

The funeral for Richard R. Tonjes, 53, of Newton, Kan., will be 2

Mr. Tonjes died Saturday, Feb. 29, 1992, at the Newton Medical
Center in Newton, Kan. He was a business manager for unified
School district No. 373 in Newton. He lived in Newton 10� years.
He was born Feb. 22, 1939, in Norfolk. Tonjes previously resided
in Bellevue.
He was a member of the Newton Rotary Cub and Zion Lutheran Church
in Newton.
Mr. Jonjes married Jean Uehling Sept. 11, 1960, in West Point. She
survives.

Mr. Uehling, a retired farmer, died Sunday in Lincoln where he
lived for the past 28 years. He was a graduate of the University
of Nebraska.
Mr. Uehling is survived by his widow. Bertha; two sons, Raymond F.

Frank Theodore Uehling
Frank Theodore Uehling. The career of the honored Dodge County
pioneer, the late Theodore Uehling, in whose honor the Town of
Uehling was named, is the subject of a separate article in this
work. A son of Theodore, and his wife Catherine (Schwab) Uehling,
is Frank Theodore Uehling, who now owns the old family homestead.
He has lived there all his life, and was born at the home place
October 26, 1878.
During his boyhood he attended the local public schools and in
preparation for a serious vocation as an agriculturist and stock
man attended two sessions of the State Agricultural College. For
five years he managed the home place for his parents, and
subsequently bought out the interest of the other heirs and has
given the old farm distinction as one of the centers of pure bred
livestock in Northern Dodge County. He has bought an additional 160
acres, making 320 acres. This is know as the Oak Hill Stock Farm
and is one of the model farms pointed out to visitors in Dodge
County.
September 12, 1908, Mr. Uehling married Miss Bertha Pauline Von
Seggern. She was born in Dodge County where her parents, Henry and
Sophia (Brockhus) Von Seggern were pioneer settlers, they having
come from Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Uehling have five children: Thelma
A., Raymond F., Lucille H., Wilma K, and Frank Theodore, Jr. Mr.
Uehling is a stanch republican in politics. He has served as
township treasurer, is secretary of the Farmers' Co-operative and
Mercantile Association of Uehling, a member of the school board,
and is a member of Oakland Lodge No. 91, Ancient Free and Accepted
Masons.

Frank T. Uehling, Jr., of Cardiff, Calif., died July 26, 2002 at the
Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla at the age of 82 years.
Frank Theodore Uehling, Jr, was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Uehling to
Frank Theodore and Bertha Pauline (Von Seggern) Uehling.
Frank was raised on the family farm at Uehling. He attended Uehling
schools, graduating from high school in Lincoln, in 1937, and the
University of Nebraska in 1944.
On Feb. 28, 1947, Frank and Gertrude Kemmler were united in marriage
in Los Angeles. They lived and worked in the Los Angeles area until
1967 before relocating to the San Diego area and establishing a
family dry cleaning business.
Survivors include two daughters; Patty O'Donnell of Cardiff, and
Cindy Uehling of Orlando, Fl; one son; Peter Uehling of Escondito; a
sister, Wilma Larson of Carlsbad; three grandchildren and 11 nieces
and nephews.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gertrude in
2000, and three sisters and a brother.
The family is planning a burial of ashes of both Frank and Gertrude
Uehling in the Uehling Cemetery in October.hhw

Services Friday For Fred Uehling
Fred J. Uehling, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 14th, at his home in
Uehling. He had been in failing health for the past year.
Mr. Uehling was born November 4, 1873 to Theodore and Katherine
Uehling, on a farm near Hooper. With his father, he was active in
the founding of the town of Uehling. He owned and operated a
hardware store for may years before he retired. He was a member of
the Congregational Church, had served as treasurer of the school
board, and was active in civic and community affairs.
On September 14, 1910, he and Miss Magdalena Menshik were married
at Fremont. They had lived all of their married life in Uehling.
Mr. Uehling is survived by his wife; and five children, Luetta
(Mrs. Marvin Fritz) of Oshkosh, Nebraska, Mrs. Rosemary Hansen of
Omaha, Beulah (Mrs. Kenneth Koehler) of Kennard, Nevin of Omaha,
and Wayne of Uehling: nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
One brother, Frank, of Lincoln, and one sister, Mrs. Jesse Golder
of Uehling. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers
and one sister.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the
Congregational church in Uehling with Rev. Allen Martin

Uehling, Neb. - Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the
Congregational Church here for Magdalene M. Uehling, a member of
the family that founded Uehling.
Mrs. Uehling, who died Thursday at an Oakland hospital following a
stroke, was the wife of the late Fred Uehling, son of Uehling
founder Theodore Uehling. The senior Uehling donated the land for
the town site in 1905 and erected the first building there.
Mrs. Uehling's survivors include sons, Nevin of Omaha and Wayne of
Lewellen; daughters, Luetta Fritz of Oshkosh, Rosemary Hansen of
Omaha and Beula Koehler of Bellevue; brother, Emil Menshik of Grand
Island; sisters, Tilla Howard and Mildred Humlicek, both of Omaha;
nine grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and two great-great
grandchildren.

Life Long Citizen Answers Last Call
Henry Uehling, aged 69, of Uehling, and a well known and highly
respected resident of this community, passed away Monday evening,
April 13, at his farm home near Uehling following a lengthy
illness, Mr. Uehling was a life-long resident of this locality, and
as a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Uehling, was born on
November 12, 1861, on the Uehling homestead, now the Schutt farm, 5
miles northeast of Hooper. He was a prominent farmer and
stockraiser of the county and enjoyed a very extensive
acquaintanceship.
He was married in 1886 to Miss Marguerite Snyder, who survives him
as do also three children, Ira, Mrs. Elmer Von Essen, and Ernest.
Another son, Arthur, died about 3 years ago. He is also survived
by the following brothers and sisters, Martin A. of Hooper; Otto,
Ernest, Edward, Ludwig, Fred, Frank, Mrs. J. S. Golder and Mrs.
Joel F. Preston of the Uehling vicinity.
Funeral services well be held this afternoon at one o'clock from
the late home and then from the church at Uehling. Interment will
be made in the Uehling cemetery with the services at the grave
being in charge of the Masonic Lodge of Oakland.hhw

Henry Uehling
Henry Uehling. As one of the native-born sons of Dodge County,
Henry Uehling has lived to see many wonderful changes in the
development of his home community, both in numbers and class of
residents and in importance as an agricultural center. He was born
November 12, 1862, in Dodge County and is a son of Theodore
Uehling, a pioneer who drove through to this region with a team of
oxen.
During the period of his boyhood, Henry Uehling was better
acquainted with the Indians than with white people. The redskins
were peaceable and friendly and frequently stopped at the Uehling
home, where hospitality was extended them by Mrs. Uehling, and this
familiarity did not tend to increase the youth's awe of the
original settlers. Every year tribes of Indians would go west and
north in the fall, on hunting expeditions, and in the spring would
return to their camps, so that there was almost a constant
procession of the tribes coming and going. There were very few
settlers, the Uehling home eight miles north of Clark's Creek being
the first house reached from that point. With no fences, when the
early settlers desire to go anywhere they merely took the shortest
route. Omaha was the closest city of any size, and it required
three days to make the journey to that place, but of necessity all
the grain was hauled there, as the nearest mills where at De Soto
and Fort Calhoun. After the railroad was built to Fremont, that
place became the destination and distribution point of the early
farmers.
The education of Mr. Uehling was acquired in the public schools of
Dodge County, and as a youth and young man was associated in
farming with his father. When he reached the age of twenty-five
years he embarked upon operations of his own, first on his father's
eighty-acre farm and later on eighty acres of his own. From this
modest beginning he has extended his activities to cover farming
and stock raising on 600 acres of land, all located in Logan
Township. He is engaged in general farming and devotes a good
portion of his time to raising of thoroughbred live stock,
including Jersey hogs and Percheron horses. His labors have been
attended by satisfactory results and he is regarded as one of the
most substantial and prosperous farmers of his county. While
energetic and progressive, he is nevertheless careful and
systematic in his methods of operation, and his farm is one of he
most productive and profitable in this section. He and Mrs.
Uehling are members of the Lutheran Church, and as fraternalist is
affiliated with the Masons. While he devotes his attention
unreservedly to his farm, he is not indifferent to the duties of
citizenship, and a number of years ago served his township in the
capacity of treasurer.
Mr. Uehling was married in 1886 to Miss Marquerite Snyder, daughter
of John and Barbara (Krueger) Snyder, settlers of 1874 in Burt
County, Nebraska, who are now living in retirement at Scott's
Bluff. There were seven children in the Snyder family; one who died
in infancy, Peter, Adam, Marguerite, Andrew, Conrad and Marie
deceased. Four children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Uehling:
Arthur, who is engaged in farming in Dodge County; and Ira, Marie
and Ernest, at home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Uehling, 81 year old Dodge
countian, were held Saturday, Jan. 3, at the St. Paul's Lutheran
Church, Uehling, with Rev. Hugo Welchert in charge. Mrs. Uehling
died Dec. 31 at at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Von Essen
of Oakland. She had been in ill health for a number of years.
Music for the services was furnished by Mrs. Robert Wiegman,
soloist; Lutheran Sisterhood, song; Mrs. John Rinderhagen,
organist. Pallbearers were William Heitshusen, Carl Peters, Harry
Stromquist, Roy Daubert, William Egbers and Kermit Meyer.
Brief rites were also conducted in the Wollmer and Warne funeral
home in Hooper at 2 p.m. Burial was made in the Uehling cemetery.

UEHLING -- Homer Henry Uehling passed away Oct. 19, 2017, as the
result of a stroke. He was a life-long citizen of the Uehling
Community and a great-grandson of Theodore Uehling, founder of the
town of Uehling.
He was born to Ernest and Irma (Witte) Uehling on Nov. 13, 1941, in
Oakland. He was baptized into the Christian faith on March 1, 1942,
and was confirmed Sept. 2, 1956, at St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in
Uehling. He loved the Lord and shared his faith in God as a Sunday
school teacher and served on the church council for several terms.
He attended rural school District 67 through the eighth grade and
graduated from Uehling High School in 1959. He received his
bachelor?s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of
Nebraska in 1963, and went on to a successful farming career for the
next 54 years.
On June 16, 1963, he was united in marriage to Lowene Meyer. Upon
their marriage, they moved to the family farm east of Uehling where
he had grown up. They were blessed with four children and six
grandchildren.
Homer valued his community and supported it through leadership and
participation in the Uehling Lions Club, Uehling Co-op Board, Uehling
School Board and the Uehling Area Community Club. He was committed to
the success of the Scoreboard Caf�, serving on its Board and as
bookkeeper. Homer was a sports enthusiast. He was a member and coach
of the Hillside Dairy Softball team, enjoyed bowling league and
coached youth sports. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and devoted Husker

Homer was a loving son, brother, husband, treasured father and
grandfather and we have been blessed. He loved his family. Survivors
include his wife of 54 years, Lowene; daughters and sons-in-law:
Julie and Jim Popken of Ames, Iowa, Jill and Mike Riley of St. Louis
Park, Minnesota, and Jeanne Uehling of Chicago; son and daughter-in-
law, Jay and Sheryl Uehling of Oakland; grandchildren, Elizabeth
(Glen) Ready, Grant and Valerie Uehling, Ben Popken, Elise and Jacob
Riley; sister, Mary (Dr. Ken) Frank; sister-in-law, Mae Meyer;
brother-in-law, Lowell Meyer; nieces and nephews, Dr. Stuart (Mary)
Frank, Barbara Frank, Tony Meyer, and Jennifer (Matt) Nicholas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Irma Uehling;
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harvey and Helene Meyer; brothers-in-
law, Larry Meyer and Layne Meyer.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Uehling
Auditorium in Uehling. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday with
family receiving friends at St. Paul?s Lutheran Church in Uehling.
Visitation will also be held at the Auditorium one hour prior to the
service. Burial will be in Uehling Cemetery, Uehling.
Memorials have been established to St. Paul?s Lutheran Church of
Uehling, Uehling Park and Auditorium Fund or Uehling Area Community

Kenneth C. Uehling
Oakland - Kenneth C. Uehling, a retired farmer active in the
Oakland area, died Wednesday at the Oakland Memorial Hospital
following a brief illness. He was 71.
Mr. Uehling was born Oct. 3, 1909, at Uehling. He lived in the
Oakland area for several years.
Mr. Uehling was a member of the Oakland Masonic Lodge, No. 91, the
Oakland Gallee Chapter, No. 57 and the Oakland chapter of the Order
of the Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Omaha Tangiers
Shrine, The Burt County Livestock Feeders Association and the
Oakland Lions Club.
Mr. Uehling was also on the boards of the Mutual Insurance Company
of Oakland and the Farmer's Union Coop of Oakland.
He married the former Mary E. Walther on March 3. 1934, at Fremont.
She survives.
Other survivors include; two daughters, Mrs. James (Patricia)
Donelan, Omaha, and Mrs. David (Kay) Merrick, Boise, Idaho; two
sisters, Mrs. Alma Osterloh, Hooper, and Mrs. Edna Peterson,
Fremont; a bother, Windsor Uehling of Uehling; and four grandsons.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the First United
Methodist Church at Oakland. The Rev. Olin Belt will officiate.

Mary Uehling Funeral Held
Funeral services for Mary Uehling were held Monday morning, Feb. 3,
1992 at the First United Methodist Church. She died Jan. 30, 1992
at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha at the age of 79 years.
The Rev. Todd Karges officiated. Marilyn Swanson was organist.
Vocal music was furnished by Rev. Todd and Dianne Karges.
Pallbearers were James Mark Donelan, Matthew Donelan, James
Donelan, David Merrick, Roger Moderow and Russell Uehling.
Interment was in the Uehling Cemetery. Whitted Funeral Chapel was
in charge of arrangements.
The Order of Eastern Star conducted a service Sun., Feb. 2, 1992 at
the Whitted Funeral Chapel.
Mary E. Uehling was born Dec. 3, 1912 at Lyons to Nile and Pearl
(Wirt) Walther. She graduated from Wahoo High School and attended
the University of Nebraska for one year. She was a member of the
Alpha Phi Sorority while there.
She married Kenneth Uehling on March 3, 1934 at Fremont. They
farmed south of Uehling until 1944 and then farmed north of Oakland
until their retirement in 1976. They moved into Oakland in 1979.
Kenneth died in 1981.
Mrs. Uehling was a member of the First United Methodist Church,
Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 158, member
of the Past Matrons Club, board member of Job's Daughters Bethel
#35, and was an Oakland High School Y-Teen board member. She also
belonged to Daughters of the Nile SAT-RA Temple #59, Ugo Igo
Extension Club, and served on the election board.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Dr. James and
Patricia Donelan of Omaha and Dr. David and Kay Merrick of Boise,
Idaho; grandchildren: Mark and Sonia Donelan and Matthew and Deb
Donelan, all of Omaha. Dan Merrick of Seattle, Wash., and Sam and
Pixlynne Merrick of Los Angeles, Calif.: great-grandchildren
Samantha, Blake and Alison Donelan of Lincoln: two brothers Norris

Last Rites Are Held For Ludwig Uehling
Ludwig Uehling, 90, passed away Sunday at a Fremont hospital, where
he had been received as patient on Saturday. He had been ill for
about six months at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. G. Osterloh,
who had given him loving care in his advanced years.
Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at the
Congregational church in Uehling with Rev. Allen Martin in charge.
Burial was in the Uehling cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter
Golder, Wayne Uehling, Clifton Uehling, Ernest Uehling, Veryle
Uehling, and Vernon Uehling. It was a Wollmer and Warne Service.
Mr. Uehling was a devoted husband and father. He was a longtime
member of the Congregational church in Uehling, heading a family of
devoted Christians who lived their lives according to the Golden
Rule, and contributed much to the prosperity and welfare of this
section. Mr. Uehling was a member of the School Board when the new
school was built in Uehling. He had lived a full, rich life, and
made the world a better place, through his efforts.
Mr. Uehling was born Nov. 6, 1864 in Washington County, Nebr. At
the age of 12 he moved with his parents to a farm near Uehling,
from which he retired in 1934. On October 19, 1894 he was married
to Mathilda Von Seggern at the Von Seggern farm home near Uehling.
They celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1944. Mrs. Uehling
preceded her husband in death on Sept. 16, 1945.
He is survived by three sons, Orville and Windsor of Uehling; and
Kenneth of Oakland; two daughters, Mrs. Alma Osterloh of Hooper and
Mrs. Edna Peterson of Fremont; 9 grandchildren, 4 great
grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Jessie Golder of Oakland: two
brothers, Frank of Lincoln, and Fred of Uehling. Five brothers and

Ludwig Uehling
Ludwig Uehling. A member of that old and substantial family of
Uehlings, who from pioneer days to the present have been decided
factors in the agriculture, business and civic affairs of Dodge and
Washington counties, Ludwig Uehling has applied his efforts almost
entirely to farming, and in that vocation has achieved most
substantial success, at the same time winning the confidence and
trust of his home community. His farm and home are in section 10 of
Logan Township.
Mr. Uehling was born near Hooper in Washington County November 8,
1865, a son of Theodore Uehling, a prominent pioneer for whom the
town of Uehling was named. A sketch of Theodore Uehling and family
is found on other pages. Ludwig Uehling attended some of the
pioneer schools of eastern Nebraska, but the best lessons were
those he learned by practical contact with the land and with men.
He was strong, self-reliant and ambitious and soon after reaching
manhood had acquired some lands for himself. He married at the age
of thirty, and since then has given a quarter of a century to the
general farming and stockraising. He has always favored good stock,
and his efforts have served to advance the standards of livestock
in his section. His farm contains a herd of ten registered
Holstein cattle. He also keeps a good grade of horses. His farm
represents a growing business and a substantial degree of
prosperity, all of which has been won from a very modest start. In
a public way he has served his township as treasurer two years and
for many years as treasurer of the school board. In politics he is
a republican.
In 1895 Mr. Uehling married a daughter of Henry Von Seggern. To
their marriage have been born five children: Mrs. Alma Osterloh,
Edna, Orville, Windsor and Kenneth.

Death Sunday of Mrs. L. Uehling
Coming as a shock to this community on Sunday was the news of the
death of Mrs. Ludwig Uehling, who several weeks ago underwent a
major operation at the Dodge County Community hospital from which
she was making satisfactory recovery with promise of being ready
for dismissal within a day or two
Apparently some unforeseen and unexpected complication arose during
Saturday night and her family was called to her bedside by an early
Sunday morning message. Death resulted within a few hours.
Matilda Ann Uehling, daughter of the late Henry and Sophie Von
Seggern, was born north of Hooper Jan. 30, 1874, and passed away
Sept. 16, 1945, aged 71 years, 7 months and 16 days. She was united
in marriage to Ludwig Uehling on Oct. 19, 1894, and the couple made
their home on a farm north of Hooper until 1934 when they retired
to live in Fremont and later in Uehling for the next ten years,
coming to Hooper to make their home with their daughter, Mrs. Alma
Osterloh, in the fall of 1943. Last October Mr. and Mrs. Uehling
observed their golden wedding anniversary.
Surviving to mourn the loss of this devoted wife and mother are the
aged husband and five children, the sons being Orville and Windsor
of Uehling and Kenneth of Lyons; two daughters, Mrs. Alma Osterloh
of Hooper and Mrs. Edna Peterson of Fremont. Eight grandchildren
also survive as do three sisters, Mrs. Will Haseman, Venango; Mrs.
Henry Heyne, Wisner; Mrs. Frank Uehling, Lincoln; one brother,
Henry Von Seggern, Hooper.
Funeral rites were held Tuesday afternoon with a prayer service at
the Wollmer and Warne funeral home at Hooper at 2 o'clock and
services at the Congregational church at Uehling at 2:30 p.m. with
Rev. Arthur Swanson officiating. Interment was made in the Uehling
cemetery, pallbearers being Boyd Von Seggern, Harvey Von Seggern,
Harold Uehling, Ira Uehling, Robt. Golder and Nevin Uehling. Music
for the rites was by Miss Patricia Holmquist as pianist and Mrs.

Funeral services for Nevin Uehling were held in Omaha recently. He
was 83 years of age.
The Rev. Bill Martin gave the sermon and Orville Von Seggern was
vocalist. Pallbearers were his grandchildren, Morris Uehling. Jr.,
Martin Uehling, John Bantner, Jon Sullivan, Steven LeClair and Brad
LeClair. He was buried in the family plot at Uehling.
Nevin Uehling was born in Uehling Mar. 14, 1912, the son of
Magdalene and Fred Uehling and grandson of Theodore Uehling,
founder of the town of Uehling.
He graduated from Uehling High School in 1929, then assisted his
father who was in the Uehling Hardware business. When his father
retired he was manager of Willhoft Hardware for four years. During
World War II he worked at the Martin Bomber plant and when the war
ended he joined Union Pacific Railroad as an electrician. He
retired in 1975.
He was a member of the Junior and Senior Clubs of the Union Pacific
and belonged to Electrical Union IBEW #618. He was a member of the
Uehling Congregational Church UCC.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Mary Bolin Uehling of
Omaha; three daughters, Sandra Bentner, Carol Sullivan, and Mary
LeClair; two sons-in-law, Mekel LeClair and Terry Sullivan;
daughter-in-law, Jane Uehling; 13 great-grandchildren; 12
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Morris Uehling and Marlene

Uehling - Services for Orville Uehling, 66, will be Monday at 2

from 1-9 p.m. and Monday at the church from 11 a.m. until service

Mr. Uehling was born Oct. 17, 1902 at Uehling. He lived here his
entire lifetime. He died Friday morning at Bergan Mercy Hospital,
Omaha, following a four-month illness.
Mr. Uehling was married to Arwilda Lowe in David City on Feb. 3.
1934. He was a member of the Congregational United Church of
Christ, Uehling; AF & AM No. 91, Oakland; Uehling Lions; Board of
Dodge County Soil Conservation District, Dodge County
representative of Maple Creek Watershed Board; Served on the school
board; was a member of the board of directors of Uehling Co-op
Credit Union; and a member and past president of Farmers Co-op
Association.
He and his wife were awarded a special Nebraska Centennial Honor in
1967 for conservation accomplishments on their farm which has been
in the family for 100 years.
He is survived by his widow, three sons, Russell, Uehling; Douglas,
Lincoln, and Stephen, Uehling; two grandchildren, two brothers,
Windsor, Uehling; Kenneth, Oakland; two sisters; Mrs. Henry
Osterloh, Hooper and Mrs. Harry Peterson, Fremont.

The funeral for Arwilda J. Uehling, 93, of Uehling will be 10 a.m.
Thursday at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Uehling.
She died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.
Arwilda Lowe was born April 26, 1911, in Herman. She graduated from
Herman High School in 1929. She attended Van Sant Business College
in Omaha. She married Orville Uehling on Feb. 3, 1934, in David
City. They made their home on the former Theodore and Frank Uehling
farm, which adjoined the town of Uehling on the east.
She and her husband were active in their community. They were
members of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in
Uehling, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She
also was a member of the Women's Fellowship. She was very active in
the American Legion Auxiliary in Uehling for many years, having
served as president, district president and hospital volunteer at
the VA Medical Center in Omaha. She was a member of the 8/40 and the
Hooper Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include: three sons, Russell (and wife, Joyce) of Fremont,
Douglas (and wife, Marcia) of Almena, Kan., and Stephen of Uehling;
three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a grandson, three brothers
and three sisters.
The Rev. Linda C. Newman will officiate Thursday's service.
Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at Palmquist-Pelan
Funeral Home in Oakland with the family receiving friends from 5-7
p.m. Burial will be in Uehling Cemetery, rural Uehling.

Stephen L. Uehling, 60, of Uehling died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at
his home in Uehling.
He was born May 14, 1948, in Oakland to Orville and Arwilda (Lowe)
Uehling. He graduated from Uehling High School in 1966, Norfolk
Junior College in 1968 and Midland Lutheran College in 1971. He
taught and coached at Fremont Bergan and Doniphan until 1984, when
he moved to Uehling and continued his crop insurance business.
He was a member and former trustee of the United Church of Christ,
former Uehling fireman and served on the rescue squad, former Lions
Club member, past Civil Defense director, former mayor of Uehling,
former Uehling Labor Day Celebration chairman, past Uehling
Foundation board member and past Friends of Uehling board member.
Survivors include his brothers, Russell (and wife, Joyce) Uehling of
Fremont and Douglas (and wife, Marcia) Uehling of Almena, Kan.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational
Church, United Church of Christ, in Uehling. Visitation will be from
1-8 p.m. Friday at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland with the family

Old Settler Passes Away
Mr. Theodore Uehling at Uehling Gone to His Final Reward. Was a
Pioneer of the County
Tuesday morning February 13th, word came to Hooper that Mr.
Theodore Uehling, who has been in poor health several years and was
taken seriously ill a week ago last Monday, had passed away at his
home in Uehling at 9:37 o'clock.
All that loving hands, doctors and trained nurses could do, had
been done, but the Divine Father had willed that he should pass on
to that undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler
returned.
His demise was peaceful and quiet and as he called his loved ones
to his bedside for a last farewell, it must have been a wonderful
consolation to him to know that his children had grown to manhood
and womanhood and were all well to do and comfortably located in
homes of their own, that his life had been one that they look back
upon with pride and that on the accumulation of this world's goods
he had been successful to a large degree.
Mr. Theodore Uehling was born in Saxe-Meininger, Germany, 1836. In
1847 at the age of eleven years he came to Dodge county, Wisconsin.
On January 2nd, 1860, he was united in marriage with Miss Katherine
Schwab, who came to America in 1855 with her parents from Germany.
It was in May 1860, that he and his young wife left Wisconsin
traveling by ox team and arrived in Omaha July 2nd of that year.
They settled on Section 18, township 19, range 9, which in those
days was a part of Washington county but now belongs to Dodge
county. He homesteaded the land when the homestead act was passed
and lived on the place sixteen years, where he built a log house
and covered it with slough grass, which was used until 1870 when he
built frame buildings. He acquired by purchase the old home place
that joins Uehling on the east, where the family resided until he
built their modern home in the village of Uehling where they have
since resided.
In earlier days, Mr. Uehling was identified with the banking
interests of Hooper, was a member of Hooper Lodge No. 72, A. F. &
A. M., but after the town of Uehling was laid out on his farm land,
he moved to that place and has been actively identified with many
of the larger interests of that town. At the time of his death he
was president of the Uehling Townsite Co., vice-president of the
Uehling Hardware Co., and in earlier days has held positions of
trust with the gift of the people in the community in which he
resided. He built the elevator at Uehling now owned by the Farmers
Elevator Co., and the brick block occupied by the State Bank and
the Uehling Hardware Co.
He had the honor of being a charter member of Oakland Lodge No. 91,
A. F. & A. M. and it will be under the auspices of that
organization that the funeral services will be held at the home
Friday at one o'clock.
Besides his aged wife deceased leaves seven sons, two daughters and
a large number of other relatives and friends. The children are:
Otto, living 6 miles northwest of Uehling, Henry, 2 miles east of
that town, Ed., connected with the Townsite Co. and cashier of the
Uehling State Bank, Ludwig, lives on his farm adjoining the town,
M. A., resides north of Hooper; Fred is a member of the Uehling
Hardware Co., Frank is on the old home farm; Mrs. Jess Golder,
lives one mile east of Uehling and Mrs. Joel Preston, two miles
north of Oakland. Theodore was drowned when about seven years of

Theodore Uehling, of Section 2, Logan township, came to Dodge
County in July, 1860, and located on Section 18, township 19, range
9, where he built a log-house and covered it with slough grass.
This with the same kind of shedding for his stock served him until
1870, when he provided better buildings. He remained on that place
sixteen years and in 1870 bought eighty acres, on Section 3, the
same being Union Pacific Railroad land. He bought and traded land
in various shapes, doing the necessary improvement, to make each
tract valuable: finally traded his old home farm for a farm of one
hundred and sixty acres on Section 3, and kept adding to his landed
estate, until he now owns nine hundred and sixty acres of well
improved land. When he came to the country he was obliged to go to
Omaha for the necessities of life. He used to make the trip with ox
teams, leaving his family at the mercy of the semi-savage Indians.
Great were the hardships he and his family endured, in order that
they might possess the goodly heritage, a portion of the Elkhorn
Valley. Our subject was one of the few who remained until the
storms of adversity had passed over, and was the gainer thereby.
Mr. Uehling was born in Germany, January, 11, 1836, and is the son
of Casper and Gotliebetta (Deusing) Uehling. His parents, dying
when he was very young, left a family of six children: Frederick,
Casper, Otto, Caroline, Louisa, and Theodore.
In 1847 our subject, then eleven years of age, came with his
brother Frederick and family to Dodge County, Wisconsin, and from
there to Nebraska. Frederick died in Wisconsin, September 18, 1892.
Theodore was united in marriage January 2, 1860, to Catharine
Schwab, the daughter of Henry and Catharine Schwab, natives of
Germany, whose four children were: Catharine, Jacob, Adam and
Henry.
Our subject and his wife are the parents of the following children:
Otto, November 1, 1860; Henry, November 12, 1861; Edward, March 13,
1863; Lewis, November 8, 1864; Theodore, January 20, 1867, now
deceased; Martin, August 20, 1869; Frederick ,November 4, 1873;
Lanore, December 19, 1875; Frank, October 26, 1878; Louisa F., June
6, 1880.
Politically, our subject affiliates with the Democratic party, and
in his church relations is a Lutheran. He belongs to Oakland,
Masonic Lodge No. 72. He has been one of the school board for
twenty years, and has held other local offices. He erected his
present house in 1882, which is one of the best in all this
section.
In the reviewing of this man's life we see what can be accomplished
by energetic men with willingness to do and do well. Coming to
this country as he did an orphan boy at the age of eleven years,
battling in life for himself and finally making the success he has,
both in a financial and social way, to much credit cannot be placed
upon his career.

Married Fifty Years
Mr. and Mrs. Theodor Uehling of Uehling, Nebraska, Celebrate Their
Golden Wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Theodor Uehling celebrated their Golden Wedding
anniversary Saturday evening at their palatial residence on Fifth
street. Surrounded by all their children they passed one of the
most enjoyable events of their lives. It is an event that comes to
but few couples to pass fifty years of wedded life passing thru the
many trials and hardships incident to their early life on the
Nebraska prairies, and emerge from them in strong healthy state
with prospects of enjoying many years more of the comforts of this
life, which they so richly deserved.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodor Uehling have enjoyed the highest respect and
esteem of their host of friends and neighbors. They have raised a
large family in this community, all of whom reached maturity, but
one Theodor who departed this life in early boyhood, and everyone
of them are an honor and a comfort to this worthy couple in their
declining years. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Otto Uehling, of
Oakland, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Uehling, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Uehling,
Mr. and Mrs. Ludwig Uehling, Mr. and Mrs. Martin A. Uehling of
Hooper, Fred J. Uehling, Mrs. and Mrs. S. Golder and Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Uehling, Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Preston of Oakland.
The presents were valuable and highly appreciated by the parents.
Mr. Theodor Uehling was born in Saxe-Meininger, Germany, 1836. In
1847 at the age of eleven years he came to Dodge county, Wisconsin.
On January 2nd, 1860, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine
Schwab, who came to America in 1855, with her parents from Germany.
It was in May 1860, that he and his young wife left Wisconsin
traveling by ox team and arrived in Omaha July 2nd of that year.
They settled on section 18, township 19, range 9, which in those
days was a part of Washington county but now belongs to Dodge
county. He homesteaded the land when the homestead act was passed
and lived on the place sixteen years, where he built a log house
and covered it with slough grass, which was used until 1870 when he
built frame buildings. He acquired by purchase the old home place
that joins Uehling on the east, where the family resided until he
built their modern home on Fifth street, and has been highly
successful as a farmer and stockman, having acquired several fine
farms by hard work and economy. When they arrived in Nebraska,
their worldly possessions were two yoke of oxen a wagon and $150 in
money. The young couple were of the hardy stock of Germany and were
determined to make a home, and few have done better than they, and
have much to be thankful for, as both are enjoying very good
health.
Mr. Uehling has held different positions of trust in this community
and now is connected with some of our best institutions, being
President of the Uehling Townsite Co., Vice-President of the
Farmers State Bank, and President of the Uehling Hardware Co. He
has the honor of being a charter member of Oakland Lodge No. 91, A.
F. & A. M. At former times he was connected with the banking
institutions at Hooper and Oakland. After our little city was built
he transferred his interests here, and has put forth every effort
to make Uehling what it ought to be, one of the best towns in the
country, having built the large brick block, occupied by the
Farmers State Bank, the Uehling Hardware Co., on the first floor
and one of the finest lodge rooms in the county on the second
floor.
The Press joins their host of friends in wishing them many more
years of wedded life to enjoy the fruits of their labors.hhw

Theodore Uehling
Theodore Uehling. Sixty years ago when Dodge County was still part
of the original Washington, one of the important accessions to the
citizenship of the district was the late Theodore Uehling, who
during a long life became prominent as a Nebraska pioneer and a man
fitted by character, industry and integrity to adorn the annuals of
early settlement.
Born in Saxe Meiningen, Germany, January 11, 1836, son of Casper
and Gottliebetta (Deusing) Uehling, German farmers who died when
Theodore was young, he had a limited attendance at the common
schools of his native land until 1847, when at the age of eleven
years he came to America with his older brother, Frederick, who
located in Wisconsin. Theodore grew to manhood in Wisconsin and
achieved American citizenship there. In May, 1860, shortly after
his marriage he left Wisconsin with an ox team, and after many
days' journey reached Omaha on the second of July. From Omaha they
came up into what was then Washington County, and settled in
section 18, township 19, range 9. When Dodge County was set off
from old Washington County, his location fell in the former
division. After the passage of the Homestead Act he homesteaded his
property and gave his labors to its development for eighteen years.
Though he came to Nebraska with only a wagon, two yoke of oxen and
$150 in money, he was able to see his affairs prosper and
everything he touched respond to the benefit of himself or his
community. He proved a true friend of education, serving as school
director for a number of years, and in 1891 was elected supervisor
of Logan Township.
January 2, 1860, Theodore Uehling married Miss Kathrina Schwab, a
native of Germany, who came to the United States in 1855. The
children born to their union were Otto, Henry, Edward, Ludwig,
Theodore, deceased, Martin A., Frederick J., Leonora L., Frank
Theo. and Louise F. Most of the living sons have special sketches
in this publication.
Theodore Uehling after acquiring American citizenship allied
himself with the democratic party and cast his vote true to that
allegiance until 1897, after which he was equally stanch in his
support of the republican ticket. He was a Mason and a member of
the Lutheran Church.
When in 1905 the Sioux City and Western Railroad built through his
farm he accepted the opportunity and laid out a town, which bears
the name of this honored pioneer. He had seen the little community
grow to considerable proportions before his death, which occurred
February 13, 1912, at the age of seventy-six years, one month, two

Pioneer Woman of This Vicinity Dies at Uehling
Mrs. Katherine Uehling, 89, one of the few real pioneer women of
this vicinity and county, and widow of the man after whom the
village of Uehling was named died at her home in Uehling, at 4
o'clock Saturday afternoon following a lengthy illness. She had
been seriously ill for several days. For several years she had been
an invalid and for the past four years was able to get about only
in a wheel chair. For the past two weeks she had been confined to
her bed in a critical condition.
Mrs. Uehling, who before her marriage was Katherine Schwab, was one
of the earliest settlers of this locality. She was born at
Dellfeld, Rhein Platz, Bavaria, Germany, on Feb. 28, 1839. In 1855
she came to the United States with her parents, the family settling
in Dodge County, Wisconsin.
On Jan. 2, 1860 she was united in marriage to Theodore Uehling and
in the following May they left Wisconsin in an ox team to establish
their residence in the new country in Nebraska. After a journey
which took a couple of months they arrived in this county, taking a
homestead a few miles north of the present site of Hooper.
They remained on the homestead until 1876, when they moved to
another farm located on what is now the site of the village of
Uehling. Mr. Uehling continued farming until 1906 when he retired
and they moved to the town bearing their name to make their home.
Mr. Uehling died in 1912. After his death Mrs. Uehling continued to
make her residence there.
In her long residence in this community Mrs. Uehling became very
widely known and she and her family were among the pioneers who
were instrumental in forwarding the growth of the county and making
it the prosperous section it is today. She was a woman beloved by
all her many friends and they join with her family in mourning her
demise.
Surviving are nine sons and daughters, Otto and Mrs. J. F. Preston
of Oakland, Henry, Edward, Mrs. J. S. Golder, Fred J. and Frank T.
of Uehling, and Martin A. of Hooper, 38 grandchildren and 11 great
grandchildren, and two brothers, Adam Schwab of Fort Lupton, Colo.,
and Henry Schwab of Hooper.
Funeral services were held and interment was made at Uehling,
Tuesday afternoon.hhw

Wayne F. Uehling
Uehling - Wayne F. Uehling, 68, a former Uehling mayor who lived in
Omaha, died Monday afternoon of cancer in an Omaha hospital.
Mr. Uehling was born July 27, 1915, in Uehling. He lived there
until 1943. He served in the U.S. Army until 1946, when he moved
to Omaha. In 1951, he returned to Uehling and worked as a retail
grocer until his retirement in 1973.
Mr. Uehling then moved to Lake McConaugly, near Ogallala, where he
owned and operated a music store. He retired from that business in
1980 and moved back to Omaha last July.
He was a member of the American Legion post in Uehling, the
Ogallala post of the Veterans of Forign Wars and the Uehling Lions
Club. He served as mayor of Uehling for several years and was
ambassador from Uehling to Ak-Sar-Ben.
Mr. Uehling married Emma Musil on May 4, 1941, in Dodge. She
survives.
Other survivors include a son, Frederick of Omaha; brother, Neven
of Omaha; three sisters, Mrs. Luetta Fritz of Oshkosh, Mrs.
Rosemary Hansen of Omaha and Mrs. Beulah Koehler of Bellevue and
one grandson.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Warne Funeral
Home's Uehling Chapel. The Rev. Godfrey Melergerd wil officiate.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Uehling
Chapel.
Burial will be in Uehling Cemetery.hhw

Grocer Uehling, 68, Dies; Rites Thursday
Funeral services for Wayne F. Uehling, 68, will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Thursday at Warne Funeral Chapel in Uehling, Neb.
Uehling, who owned Wayne's Cash Save Grocery store in Uehling before
he retired, was the grandson of Theodore Uehling, who in 1906
founded the town that bears the family name. He died of cancer
Monday at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Wayne Uehling is survived by his wife, Emma; son, Fred W. of Omaha;

Emma Uehling
Funeral services for Emma Uehling of Omaha, formerly of Uehling,
were held Sat., Sept. 17, 1994 at Warne-Johson Funeral Home-Uehling
Chapel. She died September 14 at her home at the age of 80 years.
Interment was at the Uehling Cemetery. Pallbearers were Steve
Uehling, Russell Uehling, David Clough, Jim Quigley, Bruce Koehler,
Robert Goodman and Skip Katzman.
A memorial service was held Monday morning at St. Weneeslaus
Catholic Church in Omaha.
Emma Musil was born Feb. 15, 1914 to Frank and Josephine (Holub)
Musil at Dodge. She attended Dodge High School graduating in 1932.
She attended beauty school and owned a beauty shop in Omaha before
her marriage to Wayne Uehling on May 4, 1941 at Dodge.
They owned and operated Wayne's Grocery Store in Uehling for many
years before retiring in 1973 when it was purchased by Marv
Hilbers. They lived at Lake McConaughy until 1983 when they moved
to Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; three sisters,
Mary Fry, Anne Cochner and Della Kempf and a brother, Joe Musil.
Survivors include her son and wife, Fred and Barb Uehling of Omaha;
two grandsons, Michael and Mathew of Omaha; sisters-in-law, Rose
Mary Hansen of Omaha, Beulah Koehler of Bellevue and Luetta Fritz
of Oshkosh and a brother-in-law, Nevin Uehling of Omaha.hhw

Windsor H. Uehling
Uehling - Windsor H. Uehling, 78, of Uehling, died Wednesday
afternoon a Logan Valley Manor in Lyons after a two year illness.
Mr. Uehling was born May 11, 1906, in Uehling. He lived his entire
life in the area and was a retired farmer.
He was a member of First Congregational Church UCC of Uehling, The
farm Bureau and Tekamah Shrine Club. He was also a charter member
of the Uehling Lyons Club, a past director of the livestock
Producers Association and a past member of the District 49 School
Board.
Mr. Uehling was also a 50-year 32-degree Mason, past master of
Oakland Masonic Lodge 91 and an associate patron of Job's
Daughters.
He married Frances Hartzell on June 4, 1938, in Omaha. She
survives.
Other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Jean) Tonjes of
Newton, Kan.; two sisters, Alma Osterloh of Hooper and Edna
Peterson of Fremont, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will
be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church UCC of
Uehling. The Rev. Hiram Lilley will officiate. Burial will be at
Uehling Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Warne Funeral Home
Uehling Chapel. Visitation will also be from 12:30 p.m. until

Uehling - The funeral for Frances S. Uehling, 88, of Uehling will
be 10 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church, UCC, in Uehling.
She died Wednesday, July 31, 1996, at Good Samaritan Center in
Scribner.
Frances Hartzell was born April 26, 1908, in Lead, S.D. She
graduated from Norfolk High School in 1926, attended Monticello
College near St. Louis, and graduated from Northwestern University
in 1932. She was employed as a teacher in North Platte, Kimball
and Neligh schools prior to her marriage. She married Windsor
Uehling June 4, 1938, in Omaha. She had been a Uehling resident
since 1943, living on the family farm south of Uehling for about 45
years, until she moved into town after her husband's death. Her
husband died May 22, 1985.
She was a member of First Congregational Church, UCC, in Uehling
and a member of Order of Eastern Star in Oakland of which she
recently received her 50-year pin. She also was a member of
Uehling Legion Auxiliary and the Fremont Chapter of Daughters of
the American Revolution.
Survivors include a daughter; Jean (Mrs. Wayne) Anders of Newton,
Kan., two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. She also was
preceded in death by a brother.
The Rev. John Hargreaves will officiate Monday's service.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Sunday at Warne-Johnson funeral home in
Uehling. Burial will be at Uehling Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to First Congregational Church in
Uehling, the Shriners Children's Hospital and the hospice program

Stanley G. Voskamp, age 93, of Scribner died Tuesday, Nov. 13,
2018, at Parkview Home in Dodge.
Stan was born near Scribner on Sept. 22, 1925, to Gerrit and
Margaret (Grone) Voskamp. He moved to the Uehling area. He was
baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hooper. He
received his elementary education in a country school near Uehling
and attended high school in Uehling, graduating in 1943. Stan
managed a fertilizer firm for many years. He served on the church
board and school board. He was a member of the Lions Club, Uehling
Fire Department, Masonic Lodge and coached Little League baseball.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Renter on April 3, 1949, at
the Congregational Church in Scribner. They lived in Uehling and
had two sons, Jan and Jeff; and a daughter, Ann.
Survivors: wife, Marilyn of Scribner; children, Jan and wife Mary
Voskamp of Langley, Oklahoma, Jeff (wife Susan) Voskamp of Rogers,
Arkansas, and Ann (husband Russel) Poppe of Scribner; nine
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, infant son Joel, sister
and two brothers.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at United
Lutheran Church in Scribner. The Rev. Dr. Nicki McIntyre will
officiate. Burial will be in the Uehling Cemetery. Visitation at
Ludvigsen?s Scribner Chapel will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Donald A. Young, 71, of rural Oakland died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011,
at his home.
He was born June 27, 1939, on a farm near Bassett to Glen and Eva
(Roethler) Young. After graduating from Charles City High School in
1956, he served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. He married Julie
A. Miles on Sept. 11, 1960, in Waterloo, Iowa. They lived and farmed
near Bassett until 1972 when they moved to Uehling. There he managed
Hillside Dairy. In 1985, they moved to their present home on an
acreage near Uehling.
Survivors include: his wife, Julie; four children, Laura (Dave)
Devoe of Murrieta, Calif., Keith Young and Martha Rains of Scribner,
Lila (Bruce) Peterson of Omaha and Carla (Tim) Kaup of Arlington;
two sisters, Mary (Joe) Koenigsfeld of Dakota City and Betty
Attleson of Rochester, Minn.; two brothers, Bill (Shirley) Young of
Gladbrook, Iowa, and Dick (Kay) Young of Charles City, Iowa; 14
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Oakland with the Rev. Mark Eldal officiating.
Visitation with the family receiving friends will be from 4-8 p.m.
Friday at Pelan Funeral Home in Oakland. Visitation will continue
one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church. Burial will
be in Uehling Cemetery with military honors.hhw
