1870
By 1870 the Mauk family was fragmented and scattered. Elizabeth had filed for, and was awarded a divorce and substantial properties. Elizabeth charged drunkenness and spousal abuse, and was supported by a handful of depositions from friends and family. Many of their children remained in the home with Elizabeth. Others remained nearby. Before the end of the following decade a little over 42 of the 98 acres awarded to Elizabeth will be sold to John Tyler Deweese and his 1872 bride, Martha Elizabeth Richards, daughter of Catherine, granddaughter of George and Elizabeth.
George and ninth child and sixth son Jesse, and their new brides removed to Mitchell County Kansas in the north central portion of that state. We have yet to uncover a legitimate marriage record for George and second spouse Eliza Sartain. While we have located a census record for George and Eliza, we have yet to find a record for Jesse and Susan perkins Mauk for 1870.
Tenth child and 7th son of George and Elizabeth Shipley Mauk, Zachariah Henry Clark, has removed to Cumberland County and is studying the ministry with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
