The Interview with Albert John McLeod cr. 1920

"How are our Boykin cousins?"

"Alexander, with his family, left Scotland and traveled to Ireland for a time. They sailed from Ireland to Virginia and a brother, Norman, was born on board ship. They eventually migrated to Robeson, North Carolina where another brother named Daniel was born. Alexander with his wife, a McIntosh, left for Old Camden District in South Carolina. Alexander had two grants of land on Beaverdam Branch. He had cousins who were Bethunes. Daniel's descendants remain in the area today" (Sumter/Kershaw). Interview notes provided to Lori McLeod Wilke by Col. Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr., who received them from the late Jay Frank McLeod, the Interviewer of Albert John McLeod. Albert was a gr grandson of Angus and Nancy McCutchen McLeod.

Identity Confusion !

Anyone doing a genealogy search on google will be well aware that this Betsy McLeod and this Norman McLeod can be found in several unrelated files on McLeod lines of the Sumter and Kershaw Counties of South Carolina. I first became aware of this couple when I began to search out the identities of my Alexander McLeod's brothers, Daniel and Norman. During that search, a copy of the Von Hacke Records on McLeods of Sumter was sent to me by a fellow researcher in 2001 along with a 1978 letter from Jay Frank McLeod to Purdy Belvin McLeod Jr. regarding the above 1920 interview. Records in both South Carolina and Alabama prove that Norman McLeod the husband of Alexander and Sarah (--?--) McLeod of the "Fork in Lynches Creed" was married to Betsy the daughter of Angus McLeod - he was not married to Elizabeth Lackey.....

The Family of Betsy McLeod

Betsy was the daughter of Angus and Nancy McCutchen McLeod, born after their immigration from Scotland to the United States. Although the exact year of her birth is unknown, census records have shown that she was born between 1795 and 1800 in North Carolina. Migration from North Carolina into South Carolina took place sometime between the 1810 and 1820 census takings - the family was in Richmond County NC in 1810 and found in Sumter County SC in 1820.

The Family of Norman McLeod

Norman was the only known son of Alexander and Sarah (--?--) McLeod (not the son of our Alex and Sarah) whose property lay in the fork of Lynches Creek where it crossed the Kershaw and Sumter border. Norman was born cr. 1795 in Scotland according to his census records (1850-1870 in Macon and Pike County Alabama). It is unknown exactly when this McLeod family came into the United States but they arrived Kershaw/Sumter South Carolina after the 1820 taking of the census. Their first property purchase appears to have been in 1822.

Todays Turkey Creek Township of Lee County includes DeKalb Township of Kershaw County west of the Scape Or and west of Lynches River and the part of old Bishopville Township of Sumter County which lays North of the public road leading from Stokes Bridge on the Lynches River to the Harrison Hall Mill - see the 1821 Mill Map of Stephen H. Boykin for more detailed info (improved in 1825; this area includes the Lucknow Township {incorporated 1897})
Nine miles from present day Bishopville and eighteen miles from Camden (Kershaw), Turkey Creek lies on the northern edge of Lee County. Lee County Past and Present Volume II

YDNA Testing with the ACMS Project at FTDNA

Descendants of the Polly McLeod McKay (McCoy in some early records) state that Betsy and Norman were "cousins" - whether this is oral history or assumed because of the shared surnames is unknown.

Descendants of Betsy's brother Alexander (h/o Sarah McIntosh) have been tested in the FTDNA project; testing of male descendants of Betsy and Norman could determine whether the families were close relations, shared an ancestor further back in the MacLeod Family Tree or whether or not Norman's family assumed the surname for some other reason. If you descend from this line of McLeods, please consider joining the DNA project.

Some of the matches for the three descendants of Alexander McLeod (h/o Sarah MacIntosh) are shown below:

Galtrigal Branch - the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of two cousins is a 67-1 match to the Deduced Ancestral Haplotype of our family. Descended from Donald the Faithful Pilot who is credited with helping Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora MacDonald flee after Culloden, the family occupations are Milling and Fine Carpentry as they are in our own family. Galtrigal is located across the loch from Dunvegan Castle. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our Family in a generation born about 1700.

Colbost - Norman MacLeod, heriditary Galley Maker (Fine Carpentry) to Dunvegan, born about 1700 in Colbost located near Dunvegan. His descendant is a 67-2 from our family haplotype and a 67 - 1 to the Galtrigal Branch. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our Family in a generation born about 1700. The descendant tested was born in Scotland.

Norman MacLeod - born before 1775 in Scotland; immigrated to Virginia then to Gallia County Ohio - descendants of this man match our Deduced Ancestral Haplotype on markers 1 - 25 perfectly which is unusual in any one other than close relations; however one of the two descendants tested upgraded to the 67 marker level where his results showed 2 mutations in markers 26 - 37 and 2 mutations in markers 38 - 67. 95% of the time a Common Ancestor will be found between this Branch and our family in a generation born between 1530 AD and 1700 AD. One of his mutations are either unique to his paternal line within the larger related group and another is shared with Colbost above; another mutation is on a volatile marker known to mutate in very recent generations. The testing of other cousins and the upgrading of the cousin who tested only 25 markers could tell us more about this match.

Common mistakes found regarding this couple or their family's:

That this Norman was married to Elizabeth Lackey: This mistake comes from the Von Hacke Records on file at the Sumter Genealogical Society in South Carolina. Elizabeth Lackey was married to a Norman McLeod but that Norman may have been the brother of Betsy, son of Angus and Nancy. The identity of Elizabeth Lackey McLeod's husband is unknown to date but census records of Alabama, land deeds of Sumter and Kershaw Districts of South Carolina, and the Will of this Norman, on file in Pike County Alabama proves the marriage of this Norman to Betsy, the daughter of Angus McLeod.

That Norman's sister Sarah McLeod McLean was the mother of Betsy's sister in law, Catherine McLean McLeod: Catherine McLean McLeod's mother was indeed a Sarah McLean, but it is unknown if she was married to a CHARLES McLean. Catherine's relationship to a Sarah McLean is proven by the 1855 administration of her mother's estate by Catherine and Daniel's only son, John Robert McLeod (b. 1827). The 1850 Sumter Census shows this Sarah McLean widowed living near to Catherine and Daniel. Norman's sister, Sarah McLean, w/o Charles is also found in the 1850 Sumter Census with her husband and children. Catherine McLean McLeod was NOT the daughter of Charles and Sarah McLeod McLean.

Sarah McLeod McLean is named in the Will of Alexander dated 1834/5 - She was the sister of the Norman McLeod of whom this page is written - He who is the husband of Betsy McLeod, daughter of Angus and Nancy.

That Norman fought with the Kershaw Guards in the War between the States: This Norman was in his 60's during the war and living in Alabama - it was Betsy's grandnephew Norman A. McLeod, the son of Alexander E. McLeod and Harriet Yates who fought with the Kershaw Guards and lost his life. Norman A. McLeod is buried with his parents and other family members at Antioch Baptist Church in Kershaw South Carolina.

North Carolina "another brother called Daniel was born in North Carolina"

Betsy was born between 1795 - 1800 in the Fayettesville District of Richmond County North Carolina - the birth year range is confirmed by all later census records. Census: Fayetteville District, Richmond County, North Carolina Census Year 1800/Census research done by Lori McLeod Wilke into later years using Ancestry.com Census Images on line

Research into the years the family spent in North Carolina is in the beginning stages. The family was recently found in the census records for the years 1800 and 1810 in Richmond County giving us a starting point. Tax records, a Voters Registration List, and a General Assembly Petiton have been found as well. Research into land records is still in process.

At least three other children were born in this state: Daniel, Nancy and Polly. It is said that Norman was born on board ship, Alexander is known from census records to have been born in Scotland, but the birth place of Catherine and Margaret is unknown.

For more information about the North Carolina years:

South Carolina - Alexander, with his wife, a McIntosh, removed to Old Camden District in South Carolina

Betsy's family - Arrival between 1812 and 1820

Alexander, the eldest sibling of Betsy McLeod, left Richmond County North Carolina sometime around November 1812 when he made his first known land purchase in Kershaw South Carolina. The property lay on the Horsepen Branch, a tributary of the Beaverdam Branch which crossed the border of Kershaw and Sumter. John McKay, who would marry their sister Polly (Mary) was a witness to Alexander's purchase.

It is unknown exactly when the remainder of the family actually migrated - in other words, did the entire family migrate into South Carolina at the same time or did they trickle into the area. Typically, these family's would "cluster migrate" but to date we have found no indication that they came at the same time other than with Alexander and John McKay.

A Daniel McLeod purchased land in 1816 on the Beaverdam Branch in Sumter County and in 1817 a deed is recorded in which Daniel witnesses a Beaverdam Branch purchase by John McKay. Nothing has been found before 1820 for their father, Angus - yet we know from land deeds and the estate of Margaret McLeod that some of the purchases Angus made were never actually recorded or have been lost (never indexed).

Norman's family - Arrival about 1822

Norman and his family are not found in the 1820 census. The earliest record found is dated in 1822 when his father, Alexander McLeod, husband of Sarah (--?--) purchased land from John Danzy. Norman and his sister, Sarah McLeod McLean, show on their 1850 Census enumerations that they were born in Scotland. When they left Scotland is unknown; but their births around 1795 -1800 leave 20 years in which they may have been in Scotland or may have, like many of the McLeods in South Carolina, been residents of North Carolina. Von Hacke Records paragraphs on Alexander and Norman McLeod

Marriage of Betsy and Norman between 1825 and 1828

The 1820 Sumter Census of Betsy's father, Angus, shows four females still present in the household - 1 male aged 19-26; 1 male aged 45 +; 1 female aged 10-15; 4 females aged 16-25; 1 female aged 45+.

Betsy's later census records indicate she was born between 1795 and 1800 placing her within the 16-25 range of age in 1820. Polly and John McCoy/McKay were most likely already married by the taking of the 1820 census (according to the birth years of their children). Betsy is likely one of the four remaining females in the 16-25 year age range.

Norman and Betsy's first son, Angus McLeod (III) was born between 1825-1830. We know that she was married by June 14th 1828 which is the date her sister Margaret wrote her Last Will and Testament.

1820 - 1830 "He had cousins who were Bethunes! "

1820 - Betsy is found unmarried aged 16-25 in her parents home along with at least three of her sisters and an unknown female aged 10-15 and her brother Daniel. Census; Sumter District, South Carolina, United States of America Census Year 1820, page 151

In December, Betsy''s father, Angus, makes what appears to be his first land purchase in South Carolina in which he buys 225 acres with a mill and a pond on 1 acre; the land is located on the Beaverdam Branch (in the present day Egypt Community of Lee County, shown on Lee County Maps as the McLeod Mill Pond). Sumter County Deed Book F, page 649; accessed and copied June 2004 by Lori McLeod Wilke - As Anquish McLeod bought from Edward Reynolds 200 acres on Beaverdam Branch. part of a grant to Jacob Sellers 9-6-1774; with a mill and 1 acre at the NorthEast end of the Dam; Witnesses Johannas Arrants, Elias Mims

1822 -1826 - Norman is said to have been witness to several deeds filed in Sumter County; these have not yet been researched. Sumter Deed Book G page 427 - October 24, 1822 - Norman McLeod 24. Sumter Deed Book G page 50 - January 11, 1823 - - Norman McLeod 25. Sumter Deed Book G page 42 - April 09, 1826- - Norman McLeod -all mentioned by Von Hacke in connection with this Norman McLeod

1822 on May 6 of this year, Norman bought at a Sheriff's sale from Allen Cooly 700 a. in Salem (on Mill Cr. waters of Lynches cr. partly in Kershaw, partly in Sumter) in 2 tracts: 1.) 100 a. orig. grtd to Nicholas Robinson 11- - 1772, 2.) 600 a. orig. gtd to Danl Horton 5- - 1787 Somehow, between 1822 and 1834, these 700 acres become part of his father's estate (Alexander). In 1834, Alexander gifts these 700 plus 460 acres (1,160) back to Norman for one dollar. Norman sells these 700 acres to James Skinner in 1838 (rec'd 1839) prior to migrating to Alabama. (See 8-15-1834; see 3-6-1839) accessed and copied June 2004 by Lori McLeod Wilke Sumter County Land Deed Book FF page 229/Book FF page 165

Although not stated in the Deed Gift from Alexander to Norman (1834) the 1838/9 deed of sale to James Skinner states that Mill and a Cotton Saw were included in the 700 acres. In other documents, Mill Branch is referred to as McLeods Mill Branch. From map research, it would appear that this Mill was on the Kershaw Side of the county line. (there were three McLeod Mills in what is today Lee County; which County was made up of land from Sumter and Kershaw - one McLeod Mill owned by Daniel and Catherine Mclean McLeod (McLeods Mill Pond, McCaskill Road, Lee County today), the other apparently (not yet proven) to Daniel's brother, Alexander (h/o Sarah McIntosh) prior to his death in 1824, located on Horsepen Branch, also crossing the county lines).

1828/1829 Betsy's sister Margaret writes her will on June 14th 1828 and it is probated on January 5 1829. In it, she names her four sisters; Catherine, who inherits all her "slaves"; Betsy wife of Norman McLeod; Polly, wife of John McKay; Nancy, wife of Roderick Bethune who inherits "all the rest and residue" of her estate; she names her brother Daniel and her brother in law, Roderick Bethune as her co-executors. The estate record shows that she owned 524 acres at the time of her death (inherited by her sister Nancy). The estate record also shows that Daniel did not physically appear in court for probate, the executorship was carried out by Roderick Bethune; this is likely because Daniel would have been executing the estate of Alexander during this time (effectively running the business side of it) and obviously his own estate. Later records show that the land inherited by Nancy was located next to the 200 acres that Angus purchased in 1820. Will of Margaret McLeod, recorded in Sumter County Will Book D-1 page 187 Estate File accessed and copied by Lori McLeod Wilke June 2005

McLeod, John N. McLeod and Angus McLeod, the sons of her brother Alexander, all were administrators of the Estate of Elisha Holland in the 1860's - this places the families very close in proximity of land ownership in the early 1800's. 1835 - Norman receives from his father 1140 acres on the Waters of Lynches on both sides of Mill Branch (McLeods Mill Branch in other documents) - 1140 acres - owned originally by James Ward/James Cooley( in the present day Lucknow area.) The land lay in Kershaw and Sumter Counties. Sold for one dollar and the "love and affection" - N.E. side by Rembert land formerly Bishops, on N.W. by Rembert land, formerly Talmie Bishops, and S.W. by Sumter's land and on the other side by McIntosh and McLeans lands - 700 of these acres Norman bought at the Sheriffs sale from Allen Cooley; Norman sells these lands in 1838 (recorded in 1839) prior to migrating to Alabama. On August 15th of this year, Norman's father writes his will and in it names all of his living children and three grandchildren of a deceased daughter (the children are found in his home in the 1830 Sumter District Census). The above mentioned deed of gift was written on the same day as the will. Will of Alexander dted August 15 1834 rec'd August 3 1835 Will Book D1 page 29 Bundle 66 page 7

1838/9 - Betsy and Norman begin to sell their property in preparation for migration into Alabama along with John McKay, the husband of his sister Polly; Roderick Bethune, the husband of his sister, Nancy. Her parents, Angus and Nancy McCutchen McLeod, had been found in the home of Roderick and Nancy in the 1830 Sumter Census; it is believed that Angus died sometime after April 7 1831 on which date he sold the McLeod Mill Pond property to his son Daniel. The selling of property by three of Angus' sons in law indicates that he was deceased by 1838. By the 1840 census, the McKay's, the McLeod's and the Bethune's are found in Macon County Alabama.

On March 6 1839 - Elizabeth (x) McLeod - appeared in the Kershaw Court before the Justice to release her dower rights to the property In this deed, Norman sells to James Skinner for $1000.00 "all that tract or parcel of land situated and laying in Sumter and Kershaw Districts on the waters of Lynches Creek and Mill Branch ....with a mill and a cotton saw...bounded on the east by James Skinner and on North by McIntosh lands and on west by ? Of the original family members present in the Kershaw and Sumter area of South Carolina, only Daniel and his family, and the children of Alexander and their families remain. Angus, his daughter Margaret and eldest son Alexander have passed away, it is likely that Sarah McIntosh, Alexander's widow has also passed. Three of Angus and Nancy's daughters are now living with their families in Alabama. Nothing is known of the fifth daughter, Catherine and the third son, Norman. Death of Betsy and Norman

Norman died on or about Abt. Jan 18, 1871 which is the date of his Will which is on file in Pike County, Alabama, United States of America - according to Kristen Williard, the will names land in both states (South Carolina and Alabama) which coincides with his father land named in the 1835 Will of Alexander McLeod. It is assumed that he is buried in Orion Methodist Church Cemetery with Betsy and their son Angus.

Betsy died Apr 17, 1888 and is buried at Orion Methodist Church Cemetery in Pike County Alabama.
