UPDATE JUNE 2017: "The War Between The States" AVAILABLE NOW. It's 1861 and the call for volunteers to defend the state of South Carolina have gone out. This second book in the Walking With Ghosts series once again combines fictional story telling with factual recitation of the battles our family fought during the war years, with information on the 2nd, 9th/6th, 15th, 19th, 20th and 23rd (Hatches) South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiments, Garden's Palmetto Light Artillery, Rion's Battalion (7th), the Kirkwood's Independent Cavalry Unit and the 3rd Palmetto Light Artillery Battalion and the battles each were engaged in during the war. Boykin Family of Sumter and Kershaw Districts/Counties of South Carolina

Update June 2011: Due to my heavy involvement with the YDNA Project, I no longer am "actively" researching; I have every intention of picking up my research in the near future (once the YDNA project is fully up and running) and will continue to place records and information here when found..

The site is currently being updated, however, most of the new information has come from the emails of other researchers. That information will in most cases NOT have been verified by my personally viewing the records used. Since I am not actively researching at the moment, there may have been newly discovered information on any of the surnames included on this site...i.e. new information may now be available on FreeBMD for birth and death information that contradicts what is found on this web site. Pre-2011 - From my limited research regarding the Boykin family of Sumter and Kershaw Districts of South Carolina, it would appear that Drury Boykin (b. 1743 in either Virginia or North Carolina {where his father is reported to have died} d. 1823 Sumter District, SC) and his second cousin Burwell Boykin (b. 1752 in Va. d. 1817 in Kershaw District, SC) arrived in the area about the same time.

Stephen Henry Boykin, eldest known child of Burwell Boykin was born in Kershaw District in 1773 and Drury Boykin Jr., son of Drury Boykin was reportedly born in 1771, also apparently in Sumter or Kershaw District, placing the cousins arrival in the area at around 1770.

Burwell Boykin was the witness to an 1791 land deed and is found in the 1800 Kershaw District Census. The 1800 census gives evidence of more children than have been named as children of Burwell and Mary Whitaker Boykin - these children are likely the children of ELIZABETH Boykin.

"Departed this life, yesterday morning (8/17/1817) at his seat of Residence (Mt. pleasant) near this place, Burwell Boykin, Esq., one of the oldest (66 yrs.) and most respectable inhabitants of this District." His tombstone states: The Father of 11 sons and 7 Daughters. He was upright and just man in all his dealings with the world. An honest man is the noblest Work of God.
