Lafayette Marshall Sharp
was born on April 30, 1829 in Montgomery County; Alabama. He was
the third child of Marshall C. Sharp and Matilda McGough
Sharp.
He lived in Montgomery, amidst many Sharp relatives, until around 1840, at which time his family moved to Roxanna, in what was then Tallapoosa County, and is now Lee County. Fate, as he was called, lost his father around 1845, but his mother was able to care for the children. Fate reportedly grew up to be a handsome man, with coal black hair. He always had a light heart and loved to have fun. Some time before 1850 Fate went to work for Col. Allen Bailey, near Waverly. He later became an overseer on the plantations of both Col Willis and Mr. Peason, two of the biggest planters in Tallapoosa County. While working near Waverly, Fate had been courting Callie Brown, and he and Callie married on January 27, 1856. Over the next 3 years Fate and Callie had two sons, Will and John. Callie died suddenly on May 4, 1861.
