JOHNSON- English patronymic name meaning "son of John (gift of God)"

One of the more prominent NY Johnson's, Sir William Johnson, was born in County Meath, Ireland in 1715. William arrived in Boston in 1737.  In 1749 he completed his stone home on the north side of the Mohawk River and named it Mount Johnson. Later, after the home had been fortified, it was known as Fort Johnson.  Many family traditions tell of a direct link to Sir William's line however finding that link has been a task.

Does your family have an oral history of descending from Sir William Johnson? Add your query/Johnson family information to the Sir William Johnson query page.
